Thanks Steve! Of course you are right and a boater in this condition is always special.
I was referring more to the fact that it doesn't have any fancy weaving or a parrot-colored ribbon,
as we often see on the specimens from across the pond.
Either way: I'm very happy because you'll know how rare they are now here in this size -
and what's more, it's virtually personalized with the logo and nickname

I couldn't be more happier for you, Matt.

I don't think that one would look any better or be more special with a fancy coloured ribbon. Looks great as is!

 

[The Shoe]

German boater ("Kreissäge") of unknown brand
The label looks familiar to me, but I haven't been able
to make the connection to a manufacturer yet.
"Hemdenmatz" should be the seller/wholesaler
(It's a nickname for a small child wearing only a shirt;
but it's also funny because my nickname is Matze)
crown height at 9 cm, brim at 5 cm

The hat itself with the black hat band, the bow treatment
and also the weaving is nothing very special,
but rather the standard boater as it was common
in Central Europe in the 20s and 30s...
What makes it special, however, is the bon ton ivy sweatband
and the wind cord; the hat is also in (almost) unworn condition
and fits me like a glove (I had to search for a long time...)

Colour me jealous! Exactly what I’ve been looking for.

I’m not adept dating European hat brands, but guessing from the little I do know I’d guess late 40s to mid 50s. Early 60s is even possible since it seems hats from across the pond maintained quality longer than US did.

Wanted to have an inexpensive backup straw for this years hot sweaty weather (to save wear on my Toquilla ) Got this Stetson Straw in today. Looks good enough, but its a full size larger than the tag says... Time to go did out to the shop and find some weatherstripping to pad the sweatband. Suprised me how hard this one is... Ive had straw western hats that werent this ridid. Ill be doing some steaming or misting to see if I cant soften it up a bit. Oh well...It it what it is, an expensive backup to the nicer hats that I never have to worry about. Ive got a few nicer toquilla and hemp hats for "out and about" trips, but this one will have an honored spot next to my old beater Milano western straw as a BBQ and Lawnmowing hat! Gotta look good out on the John Deere lol

That makes sense. I don't know European makers, and I have no theory as to the age of your hat. It's the ribbon that makes it look older, I think. Anyway, very nice.

For a cheapie it does look good up close. A little sweatband stuffing, steamig and setting it out in the bright sun, and fit fits ok now. Gonna look good out on the lawnmower! lol

I just picked this dark brown Dobbs up from ebay. The felt is quite thin and easily shaped. It's in perfect condition. This hat is unusual in my vintage collection in that it looks really good with a center dent crease and the brim up (it almost has a homburg-like appearance in that configuration), and it also looks good with a tear drop crease and the brim down. I have no other vintage fedora that looks good both ways, so I was pretty happy that I finally got one like this. It's also interesting that the size tag says 7 1/4 long oval, but the label behind the leather sweatband says 7 1/4 regular oval. It definitely fits like a regular oval.

Me too, Joe. I love the colors, the malleable felt quality and its profile.
A definite favorite of mine that will stay my possession till I part from this planet.
However, I have to replace the severely baconized crumbling sweatband, unfortunately.

I have a few Alexanders. The company is G.W. Alexander, and they made a fairly broad range of hats over the years. Mine range from very nice to "meh.". Yours looks like the former.
