I wanted a good hat to wear hiking out doors here in the Tongass (Sub arctic rain forest in SE Alaska) where it rains and snows a LOT. Something with a three inch brim that would stand up to the weather. I saw this Stratton F42 Trooper on ebay for $21.99 and bought it, thinking it was cheap enough to play with and, if I liked it, I could order one in a better color and without the holes in the crown and brim. The holes in the brim for the strap are a problem because they are directly over my hearing aids, kind of defeating the purpose of keeping them dry. The hat was brand new, in the original box and, although not my first choice, the color is quite nice.

After a lot of steam and some reshaping of the brim and crown I think I got it just right. But still, the holes in the brim bothered me. I had some brown leather left over from a holster project so I cut some plugs and pressed them into the strap grommets.
Here is the result:

Considering it's intended purpose, I think it came out just fine. I may not waste the money on ordering another without the holes after all.

I've wanted a bowler for years, but haven't really been willing to take a chance on a nice vintage one and haven't wanted to spend the money on a new one that won't fit right because I'm an extra long oval. Then this Resistol came up on ebay. I bid knowing it isn't highly collectable. I figured if I didn't spend too much it wouldn't matter if I messed it up trying to elongate it.

Best surprise ever. Sticker still on the inside of the sweat: XLO 7 1/4

It's in great shape and the only thing it needs is a good brushing, some steam and some shape to the brim. I reckon it's mid- to late-50s, maybe 60s.

I'll take better pictures when I get it home and cleaned up a little.

Light gray with perhaps a touch of mint in it in some lights at least. Very lightweight felt. Any info you can impart will be appreciated.
