Woo hoo! My first "New Hat" post. I was in the market for a nice Fedora, though I knew absolutely nothing about them (well, except that Indy wore one...). I've always wanted a "nice hat" as they were reminiscent of all the old detective and crime movies I grew up watching. After much hit-and-miss searching, I came upon this site, loitered a bit, and then ran across the Vintage Silhouettes thread. I read about Art Fawcett and his shop in Oregon, and I knew I would order one soon. As luck would have it, I very soon thereafter came across an eBay ad for a VS in what I presume is my size (a not-insubstantial 7 3/4...). The price was right for a like-new hat, and I pounced. The hat came in yesterday, and I was like a kid at Christmas! It's AWESOME! lol. My very first Fedora! The color is close to what is often described as "Caribou" or grey, with a dark brown (not black) ribbon. Oh, and the box was not too shabby either--my first, real, nice hat box!

It seems to fit right on, though the crown "bottoms" on the top of my head--is this how it should fit? I might try a 7 5/8 as well to see what it fits like (this is just the beginning of my collection :D ).

great hat. if you feel it's too big for you, hit me up, i will take it off your hands. i purchased the other VS the seller had to offer (will post here once the repair is done) and it fits me perfectly. yeah, art makes a great hat, definitely on par with my Optimo.

Hit it big on eBay earlier this week with this one. Resistol Kings 50 San Antonio in unworn condition. The listing said to make a reasonable offer via message and I got a great deal on one of the nicest hats in my collection, albeit one that looks like many others to my wife :) Just need to shape it up a bit with a little steam. The felt is as nice as or dare I say slightly better than my Open Road 7X Clear Beaver. It has a velvety finish to it.

Congrats, Rick. By the way, my wife says the same thing about all my hats. They all look the same. Yowza.
Thanks Adrian! She says it's like going to the eye doctor and being asked to choose between semi limply identical prescriptions! Lol
My wife can easily tell my hats apart. Of course, I only have five, but she can tell the difference between them: The "light one", the "dark one", the "brown one", the "other brown one", and "No, the other brown one." :D

That San Antonio is a sweet score....a few years ago we had one that was just a different color, not sure if you could call it a brown or a whiskey but was nice. We sold it to Landman. That model hat by resistol seems to have such a look so attractive, we like it as much as a Stratoliner if not more!

That's a beauty, Cindy! I like the yellow ribbon edge binding. Very unique. The tall untapered crown is the bee's knees! Great work by Tony.

Tony seems to know what we wanted before we even told him what we wanted.....he must have a "magic hat genie" LOL!

You should obtain 2 more hats....one for each day of the week!

Thanks Cindy! I'm a huge fan of the San Antonios myself, but I love a good Stratoliner too! I bet that whiskey SA was awesome. I'm sure Mike is enjoying it!

Not a bad idea, but too structured for me. :D My daily hat selection is based on whichever hat I feel like wearing on a given day; lately the "light one" (my Silverbelly Akubra Campdraft) has been seeing a lot of head time, and the "dark one" (my Dark Brown Akubra Fed IV) hasn't been worn in well over a year.

So...your hat from Australia is missing in action....rent a Crocadile Dundee movie, put some steaks on the Bar Bee and you will get back in the mood for that one! LOL!

Intrigued by this find today at an antique store. I paid $10 for this Dynafelt that seems to be mimicking an open road / stratoliner, minus the bound brim. I had no idea what "dynafelt" was and would never have guessed this was a wool blend (85/15) hat from first handling it. Except that it weighs twice what my Open Road weighs. I decided to get it as a beater, since I seem to be on pins and needles when I take out my OR. This gives me that open road feel on my head without a concern in the world if it gets beat up. The "leather" sweatband is a fatal flaw on this thing. It was so brittle that I cut most of it out and left just enough to hold it to my head. The felt on this thing is designed to far outlast its sweatband, unfortunately. In the end, I found a stylish beater that probably won't die even when I want it to.
