I watched this last night and I must say that, overall, it showed a return to the glamour of the past. Most men wore traditional dinner jackets and many of the women's gowns were either vintage, as in Cruz's case, or modelled after a vintage look.

Ms. Bella is absolutely right about Natali Portman: perfection.

I must say that I was impressed with Hugh Jackman's singing and dancing. His attire was impeccible, especially the tails he wore for the production number. Anne Hathaway: lovely, and what a voice.

Daniel Craig doesn't look good in a shawl collar dinner jacket, or at least not that jacket. I think the shawl was too slim for him. I would have gone for peaked, as in "Casino Royale..." He should have worn that jacket. A bit of a let down that James Bond looked odd, in my opinion.

Mickey Rourke... I like Mickey. He was an early influence on my style since "The Pop of Greenich Village." My hair tends to grow up in a pompadour like wave, and I see this in the early Rourke.

I like the way the guy dresses. He has his own style. His high collar stay shirts with the matching pocket squares are totally edgy cool and work for him. He is out there exploring that edge of good taste, usually two or three steps over it, but I like and admire that.

However, it's the Oscars, not dinner in some restaurant in Miami, wear a dinner jacket for heaven's sakes.

Sean Penn looked not only ridiculous and sloppy, but ten years out of vogue. Still, he was gracious and likeable enough, especially with his "I know I make it hard for you all to like me" line. I'll always award points for self-deprecation.

Sure looks like Whoopie gave up. I thought Jessica Biels had too much bow spilling out of the top of her dress, or maybe I was just disappointed that it was covering what I really wanted to see.

Kate Winslet had an intriguing curl at the back of her hair. I thought it was pretty and was unsure how it was achieved. He dad was wearing a fedora... indoors.

Just my opinion, but I think wearing a regular tie with a tuxedo looks wrong. Makes the tux look like a black suit instead of something special.

Overall, there could have been a little more color. So many white, ivory, silver dresses. That being said, Penelope was my favorite:

I love the color of this, but not crazy about the lace arm :

I love seeing Alicia all glammed up:

Anne is fabulous:

The idea really is to de-formalize the tux to Hollywood male casual standards. The more dressed-up a man is in Hollywood, the more of a flunky he is.

After looking through about 167 pics ( I had to stop, I couldn't pay attention anymore ) I was disappointed by Mikkey Rooney... His tie and pocket square were colored...which was ok...but they were 2 different shades of an off red  It just reallllly rubbed me the wrong way.

That might be it, but I'm not so sure, especially at the Oscars. The women are dressed to the nines, so I don't see why the men would deformalize the tux. I think that either some "stylemaker" went with a regular tie and others jumped on the bandwagon so they too would be cool, or some "very cool" actor or designer just didn't like bow ties, wore a tie, and again some people didn't want to be seen as uncool.

I thought Marisa Tomei's gown looked like a spilled stack of cocktail napkins.

Yea, but how would you like to sop-up a spill or two. Shamwow!!

Sadly, the necktie with dinner jacket trend has been going on since the
1980's. It is beyond the trend stage and into the area of acceptability, at least in Hollywood, and certainly with the prom scene.

There is something very Art Deco about Marisa Tomeii's dress there. I rather like it.

Is it just me, or did Reese Witherspoon has some weird racoon-eyed make up thing going?

Marisa Tomei's dress might have looked better in another color. I love the lines, but the color looked like bleach out 80s dusty rose. And it isn't a good color for her hair and skin.

Maybe it's my monitor, but I don't see anything racoonish about Reese Witherspoon's eyes. The dress...the black fabric over it looks random.

I'm not fond of the hair but, to me, Nicole Kidman is always one of the most beautiful women in any room lucky enough to have her.
