A lot of people don't realize that trains were used to haul cane and pineapple in Hawaii. There is still a section in Maui that they run trains for tourists and on Oahu there are tracks in Wainae.

The plumes that they used for irrigation were also utilized by kids as waterslides.lol

The Hawaii Consolidated Railway was put out of business by the tsunami of 1946, but you can still see old rail bridges reconfigured as highway bridges, and the old roundhouse in Hilo still stands. The HCR was the only standard-gauge railroad in Hawaii.

That tsunami moved rail cars all the way from the bay up 1/4 of a mile on Wainuenue Avenue. My family is from that side of the Big Island; Laupahoehoe, Honokaa, Kukuihaele and my mother's parents were married at St. Joseph's in Hilo which is just blocks from where the trains stopped. The old plantation manager's house in Kukuihaele is the golden era house I would want to be the manager for the plantation. It has the wrap around porch, tennis court, swimming pool and view of the Pacific Ocean. The house the plantation moved my Dad's family into when grandpa was a field supervisor was 1600 square feet and still stands right before the entrance to Waipio Lookout. I wish I had pictures of the plantation managers house. It was put up for sale back in 1991 with an asking price of $1.5 million with 5 acres. The house apparently had some heavy termite damage.

I drove up and down the Hamakua Coast a lot in the late 1970s when I went to school at HPA in Kamuela and lived in Kurtistown in the Puna district. Very beautiful country.

And dangit, now I'm hungry for some malasadas from Tex Drive In. lol

I loved it when I went to Tex's for the first time and it was laid out;
1 malasada .50
2 malasada 1.00
3 malasada 1.50
etc.etc. all the way to 12.lol

HPA is an excellent school. Parker Ranch used to pay the tuition for the children of any employee who got accepted there.:eusa_clap (perhaps they still do)
