In desperation, I would borrow someone's typewriter and write a fictionalized version of one of my cases. Amazingly enough, I sell it to a pulp magazine. I write more stories. They sell. By 1943 I've written close to two hundred stories. I drink away my profits.
A radio bigwig gets hold of one of my pulps and wants to turn my character into a weekly drama. I write a few scripts and drink away my licensing money.
Inevitably, I die of liver failure in 1957. Forty years later somebody unearths an old copy of one of my stories and I'm hailed as a genius.
...not that I've given this a lot of thought or anything.
