No more white tie for Nobel Prize Awards ceremony?

I attended the Stockholm ceremony in 1976 and I remember it was black tie for the guests, not sure about the recipients. As a poor student I wore a black suit and there was no problem. The dinner, to which I wasn't invited, is much more exclusive.

Up until very recently, winners of the annual Nobel Prizes would wear white tie and tails when receiving them. Today's photos of the Nobel Prize ceremony suggest that this tradition might have finally bitten the dust. Does anyone here know for sure?

I was really surprised to see Obama NOT in white tie and tails. The end is near!! :eusa_doh:

Yes, the first thing I thought of when I saw Obama on TV was, 'where's his white tie?!'. I also saw him holding the award wearing just a suit.

I know that GWB disliked white tie and at least one major diplomatic ceremony was changed from white to black tie during his tenure.

My opinion is that a little ceremony and pomp can't hurt.

And what this may prove is that the folks at the Lounge think about clothes too much. ;)

Er ... a Google Images search for photos of recent Nobel Peace Prize winners (over the past 30 years or so) reveals that none of them wore white tie when accepting their prize at the Oslo ceremony.

In other words, President Obama's dark suit turns out to have been appropriate.

I reviewed the list of the last 10 Nobel Peace Prize winners, and found them to be a rather questionable lot. The whole thing has apparently been quite a farce for some time. So, again, what did you expect?

Forgive me, I was wrong in saying the past 10 years. Turns out to have been the last 30 years or so. Some good winners within that time frame: Elie Wiesel, the 14th Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, "Médecins Sans Frontières" ...

I've always chuckled at the thought of an armaments manufacturer bestowing a peace prize.

He invented dynamite for mining and construction, but it became the big thing for military use. When a newspaper erroneous reported his death, he got to read a very negative obituary of his calling him a "merchant of death", and decided to try and salvage his reputation by creating the awards.

Oh, and from the photos I saw, it looks like Obama was wearing a notch lapel dinner jacket to the banquet. The horror!

Nobel was also partially responsible for the raising of Galveston Island and the construction of the Seawall in the wake of the 1900 Hurricane, an endeavor that has saved countless lives in the century since.

The Nobel's were the Tsar's munitions men.

Since it seems this is the part where people are "coming out" about their opinion of Mr. Nobel, and his Prize I'll say that I haven't had much respect for it since Yasser Arafat won it.

Au contraire, the preceding comments are of a factual nature .

I am sorry for bringing politics into this conversation but I fail to see how this couldnt be about politics.

Because it's about how a person is dressed. Sorry you can't read anything about the president without frothing about our "colored" president "hussein". Free Republic is thatta way.
