Late minstrels of the restless earth,
No muteness can be granted thee,
Lift thy laughing energies
To that white point which is a star.

Jean Toomer, The Blue Meridian

Awake, sipping bourbon, and both lamp and pipe are lit.
St Thomas' shibboleth, parvula vetula; Jacques Maritain; and the Harlem Renaissance.
At least until midnite...:)

Anybody other midnite owls awake here?

Back on these *hoot*ing night shifts, but that's okay, I have my fellow nights owls to keep me company for at least a little while... right?... Guys?
Anyone?

Droning a drowsy syncopated tune,
Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon...
And far into the night he crooned that tune,
The stars went out and so did the moon.

Langston Hughes, The Weary Blues

Notre Dame versus Michigan State tomorrow. A must win for the Irish.

Any other "Irish" ;) night owls awake?

Sorry not Irish, that's the bad news and the good news is that this will be my last night shift for awhile, so thanks the folks that talk with me on this nightime sojurns of the soul... I'll dig the thread up in a few weeks time.

Or continue using it please.

Red streaks strike through the gray of the sky,
The dawn comes to the city.

Claude McKay, When Dawn Comes To The City

Notre Dame falls to Michigan State.
Midnite yet to strike; a briefcase full of paperwork, and listening to
Chicago's flamethrower, WLS Radio 89* AM post game analysis.
Stanford next week.

Anybody else staying up late burning the midnite oil? :)

me too though it's bedtime. irritating though, now that I'm finally awake it's time to go to bed!

thought for you though, one of my favorite poems actually, by EAP trying to go from memory. then it's off to bed for me

To F__ S. O___d

though wouldst be loved!
then let thy heart from its present pathway part not
being every thing which now thou art
be nothing which thou art not
so with thy world thy gentle ways
thy grace, thy more than beauty
will be and endless theme of praise
and love -- a simple duty

I'm getting too old for this

Well at least someone is still up to talk to.

Anyway, yesterday i get into a pretty good knock down drag out at work. (LEO stuff)

Well, needless to say, I must be getting too old for this crap. Because my left shoulder and bicep are messed up and my left Achilies tendon is trashed.

The problem is that somehow I really don't remember feeling like this when I was younger....

Respectfully, not that someone in my position is qualified to give someone with your experience advice...

Remember that saying about "age and treachery" versus "youth and vigor"? As years go by, the answer becomes more and more not to "fight harder" but to "fight smarter", like a concept Michael Janich calls "pinballing"--the other guy's head is the ball, and you wanna bounce it off any "bumper" you can find that's not likely to penetrate.

I don't know the details of your situation or mean to butt in where I have no business, and I wish you a swift recovery.

...the hard thing but to pray,
But bid for patience is! Patience who asks
Wants war, wants wounds; weary his times, his tasks;
To do without, take losses, and obey.

Gerard Manley Hopkins

Poe is a most incurable romantic; while Manley is a most incurable curate,
and all the more endearing for his innocuous sweet nature.

Stanford will likely vanquish Notre Dame, leaving the season a busted flush.
Pub crawl is over, bets laid.

The Cautions of St John of the Cross and its Aristotelian-Thomist foundations until past midnite; or later.

Any other Night Owls burning the lamp oil? :)

Ugh, a full day of cleaning out a warehouse, doing laundry, steaming shirts and waiting on roofers. I'm beat and can't believe I'm still awake. It's time for a Scotch.
