My first hand crafted fedora

Allow me to share my very first hand made fedora. Finding vintage in my size of 7-3/4 has been a challenge; so a while back I started buying some things I needed to make my own hats. See below the result of my first crack on the block.

Specs:
Crown: 5-7/8 open
Brim: 2-5/8
Sweat 24-1/4''
Body: Beaver-Winchester
Color: Steel Grey
Ribbon: Vintage US Ribbon Co. Dark Blue, roll indicates size 9

I am looking forward to making more hats…..needless to say I may be posting some of my current collection to the classified section to support the habit.

Enjoy…….feedback please.

Cheers,

Tim

That is very nice, Cane Rod Maker. Someday, I might have to attempt learning how to do this myself. In your experience, is the cost of getting all of the stuff together to make it actually cheaper than a good custom-made beaver hat, about the same price, or more?

I'm curious to know about how long it took you to obtain the skill to make that hat. Can you tell us what steps you had to take leading up to this?

Gentlemen: Thank you all for the positive feedback. As far as the skills question, I really think it is just how well one has the ability to pick up on things. I only practiced on a different body to get a pouncing that I liked; then went right to it on this one.

See....I like making things....I am a machinist. I run a Lathe and make custom parts to close tolerances from blueprint specs. I always had attention to detail; restored a 67 GTO and a Triumph Motorcycle, and learning to make cane fly rods......I just said to myself I must do this. Having several examples of hats was a big help as well.

I just blocked up hat number 2. I will be sure to post it when I am done. Thanks again!
