Best milkshakes I've ever had in the Los Angeles area: at the very very "Golden Era" FAIR OAKS PHARMACY in South Pasadena.

Gotta see it: http://www.fairoakspharmacy.net/fountain/menu.html

Incidentally, they mention Mashti Malone's in that article. Mashti Malone's is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Lava Lounge in LA, which is a really awesome tiki bar. Definitely worth a trip to both. I used to live right up the street from there!! :( I miss it.

Here's a pic of the Lava Lounge:

59 Diner...

in Houston. And really I prefer malts. You're making my hungry.

There are (were) two of these great diners here in Houston. This one was torn down to make the highway wider this year. It had been there a long time too.

For some reason, I really don't like In-n-Out's shakes. If I'm going to have a fast food shake, my first choice would be Fatburger's chocolate shake. My second choice would be Jack in the Box's cookies and cream.

For a sit down chain, Ruby's can't be beat, especially their double vanilla.

If I'm going to go out of my way, I guess I'll have to go to Pasadena, because it's a tie between Fair Oaks Pharmacy in South Pasadena for atmosphere and Fosselman's in Alhambra for richness. Although if I had to choose, Fair Oaks Pharmacy would win.

I'll definitely have to try the others on that list. I was in the Queen Mary's shake shop about two weeks ago, but I needed actual food. I've always wanted to try Mashti Malone's. Their sign is so intriguing with the Persian (?) writing on it.

My own dear New York boasts the Lexington Candy Shop, 1226 Lexington Av. Opened in 1925, last major remodeling in 1947. Best malts in the city. Expensive, though, but who cares??

Aww, I wish there were still drugstore soda fountains like long ago; they seemed so cute!

artdecodame, you need to take a trip to Phoenix and stop by MacAlpine's Soda Fountain. The pharmacy closed a few years ago, but the fountain is still there--and their milkshakes are the best! I work there from time to time, which works to my advantage because I get to make my own shakes (and sodas and egg creams, just the way I like ‘em ;) )

50's? Well, this may be good news or bad depending on how you look at it... I just found this photo and it's from 1937... this photo shows two mixers, they both look very close to your machine... this style of mixer is eariler then the 50's! The tumblers you have are 50's and what color!

How about that? It's earlier then you thought!

Of course I'm dating myself, but I remember when I was a kid in the late 60's McDonalds still made shakes with those. And I also remeber how the fries were still made from fresh, whole potatoes that they pressed down through one of those slicers.

Yes, they sure do, however, some don't care for their fries... I like'em as long as they're fresh and hot... when they get cold... ew. lol

I love IN-N-OUT's food, their shakes are good and their burgers are just the most tastiest!!! Got to have it "Animal Style"! It's a Southern California tradition since 1948!

For that neighborhood they're a great "cheap eats" spot. Their lemonade is sublime.

How's it going? Have you gotten to third base yet? Are you gonna go steady with yourself? ;)

Now see....I -almost- said that earlier....but resisted....

some might say that I was trying to be ladylike...but others might think that I abstained in order to lure you into staying a spell...since you can't resist those quips, Mr. Chevalier.
