Mac Lachlan Beaver Forty. 2 7/8 inch brim and 5 1/2 inch open crown. It has a Hatters Union tag that I didn't bother to photo.

Glad to see it arrived safe and sound, Mike. Looks great! How does the felt feel… Say in comparison to Twenty’s of other brands you’ve picked up?

As I always say, I'm not a felt expert, so all I can give you are my impressions or thoughts, based on my own likes or dislikes. I tried to give a lot of thought before replying to your question. To give my final answer first, this Mac Lachlan is it's own unique thing to me, very soft and moldable and obvious good quality, but comparing it to a range of other hats, none seemed to have quite the same characteristics. A few Twenties gave the impression they were somewhat close in quality, or trying to be, such as a Knox Twenty, a 40's Stetson Sovereign Beaver Twenty, a Caxton Beaver Twenty, etc. But I also compared it to my 3 Dobbs Forties, 2 Knox Forties, Lee Forty, Knox Fifty, Resistol Fifty, etc. None of them really seemed the same, they all each had different characteristics.

Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough response. You have had a lot more experience with higher end felts.. I don‘t Think I’ve handled anything over a twenty in a dress felt so I was curious.

I also looked at my Stetson 100, Dobbs 100, and Knox 100, for any resemblance to the Mac Lachlan, but I could see pretty quick that this didn't solve anything. I'll add this note - Some Forties you know as soon as you pick them up they're a Forty because they are heavier than a Twenty, ie they're more heavily felted. Other Forties aren't any heavier than a Twenty or might even be lighter, because instead of increasing the quality by adding more felt, they use a higher quality of felt to begin with. Again, my impression. The Mac Lachlan tends toward this second category and in some ways reminds me a bit of the 30's-40's Knox Forty I recently bought, which is a special hat made of Beaver. But the Knox is in it's own class.
