I guess trying to do the right thing just isn't the right thing anymore. I hope I'm wrong. I hope the buyer is completely happy. Caveat Emptor!

That's it.

I bet there are far more people on the FLounge who've beniftted from badly listed/described items that have fallen victim to them. I've found a few beauties languisihing unnoticed because they were described/listed as top hats.

Maybe I should have done the right thing, but then either I wouldn't have won the auction or I would have paid more.

What's a fella to do? [huh]

Oh I'm sure you are correct, why just today I bought a Disney Fedora that I'm sure the seller had no clue that is was a Disney even though it clearly showed the Disney Crest inside the hat. Nothing in the description mentioned it was Disney. Your right, I should have contacted that seller and informed him it was a Disney Hat which obviously meant nothing to him.

We're also looking at Vintage items here. What's the old saying? "Ones mans trash is another mans treasure"

You're right, we all look for those hidden treasures on eBay. More than likely the people selling the "mis-described" items are just trying to make room in their closet or attic, it's up to us, the buyers to look at those items on their own merit and decide what we would like to pay for them.

And I'm sure that the seller of the hat in question in this thread was totally ignorant about hats too, he or she just happened to pull the word "Whippet" out of his butt and type it in the title of the auction. Not "Similar to Whippet" or "Looks like a Whippet" but these exact words "Vintage ROYAL STETSON FEDORA GRAY WHIPPET HAT & BOX EX!"

Had I told my wife that I wanted a Whippet for Fathers day and the best place to find a Whippet in my size would most logically be eBay, and I said that they typically sell for between $60.00 to $200.00 depending on the shape and quality of the hat and box. My wife (not being into hats) would do a search for "Whippet" and that hat would show up in the results. She would read the title and description and based on that information, would probably bid on that hat.

Again I hope I'm wrong, I hope the buyer knew exactly what he or she was buying. As I said before, if it was an honest mistake, that fact that I pointed it out to the seller and he did nothing to change the listing, makes it dishonest.

Just as an aside, the same seller has more hats for sale, he seems to know his hats, except "conveniently" decade of manufacture.

You're a man after my heart, GWD.

I ain't the world's most virtuous character, and I certainly understand that this world has always presented its ethical dilemmas, but dang it, dishonesty is dishonesty. If we tolerate it, or make excuses for it, well, I fear what that will get us.

If anyone feels up to reading some clear, common sense thinking on the matter, I can recommend a book titled "Lying: Moral Choice in Public and Private Life," by Sissela Bok.

Your kids are fortunate to have the guidance of a man with his head on straight. Keep it up.

GWD, I think you did the right thing. I ask the seller a couple of questions about the hat and they answered immediately, but when I ask if it said Whippet inside the hat, I got no response.
