Help locating Tweed lining..for Grizzly custom

Hello all

A few days ago I posted a link to a 30's Grizzly I found on the net...some of you may have seen it. I've been so intrigued by the lining that I want to find out what it is, and where (if humanly possible) I can find similar or same kind of Tweed. I say tweed because at first glance i thought it was Tartan but I contacted Lochcarron in Scotland, who said it was not a Tartan and that kind of weave wasn't common to Scottish weavers.
So i'm stumped. The jacket was made in Milwaukee, so i'm guessing that the lining was American or Canadian sourced/made. Beyond that I have no idea. Given it wasthe 1930's it may be a bit of a stretch finding a maker today, but it's not impossible. i'm hopeful.
If anyone on the lounge with knowledge about these things knows anything, no matter how small the lead, please let me know.

Why not check Magee of Ireland? They are famous for their Donegal Tweed. I am not sure if they sell bare cloth but you could buy one of their tweed wool rugs or throws and have that made into a lining for a Grizzly.

Thanks JanSolo for the info...I contacted them too, but they mainly do light to medium weights and not the weave i'm after. It's one of those things...when you want to do something just right, it's hard to compromise. Good tip though. A heavy weight blanket would be perfect. But its got to be a heavy weave and quite rough....

I'll be moving to Tasmania, after I get back from London. The winters in Tassie can get very cold...Antarctic winds from the south plunge temps to well below freezing. A Grizzly would be perfect.

Yes, Holland & Sherry!! I was just about to mention them! Excellent cloths. You might find something among their Fall/Winter 2010 collection (apparel) or among their interior collection.

Though they don't have exactly what you're looking for, Ardalanish offer some rather tasty looking tweeds.

If I recall correctly, some of them are undyed and use the natural colours of the wool. Just don't look at the price...

This one is similar to the lining used in the Grizzly, though with fewer colours. And it's £125 per metre if you're feeling flush.

Personally, I'd be inclined to find a piece of tweed that has the spirit of that lining, but not necessarily a match.

A warm thank you for all the help. I contacted Ann Maccallum at Harris Tweed, and she reckons it is a Harris Tweed, whats called a bell celtic weave, from a long time ago. Graemsay I too was inclined to find a Tweed in the 'spirit' of that original lining, I wasn't too bothered about an exact match. There are some beautiful Harris tweeds listed though. However to my amazement, she said that they can replicate the same design and colour and weave no problem at all. They'll also send out samples of wool thread in different hand dyed colours to work out a 'new' colour scheme or design if I wanted to go down that route. Cost to make? single width 73cm of min 5M length works out to be 82 GBP's. For a bespoke Tweed that's amazing. I was never imagining this was possible. I'm very excited.

If it's £82 per metre and you need five metres then that's rather expensive. But if it's £82 for the minimum length then that's not a bad price for a piece of handwoven cloth.

Look on the bright side, you're contributing to keeping an artisan tradition alive, and the lining will be handwoven.

It's 82 pounds for the whole 5m length. Not bad for handwoven cloth. And if it supports an old artisan tradition even in a small way so much the better. We all need to nurture and support them.
