I am a very junior mamber of this site, but I think I have some information to share on the Baltimore area. I just got off the phone with Hippodrome Hatters. I asked about getting some hat repairs, and I thought the guy was teasing me when he said "In september." Apparently, they do pretty much any labor intensive repairs on hats, and you can bring them in for an estimate, but you have to wait until September before dropping it over for the actual work. This is after they get their fall line completed, and they have time available to work repairs.

In my particular case, he asked what I wanted worked on and then a bunch of follow-on questions. I told him I had a silver Resistol with "kitten finish". he siad that they probably would not work on this one. This may be old news to many, but I'm new. He said that the blacks, browns and other dark colors are ok, but many of the lighter colors are "pounced", which he explained was the addition of colored powder to make the color of the hat. He also told me how to check if it is pounced or not (and I dont think this one is). All in all, it didn't sound like they were interested in working on my Resistol, so I guess I will need to send it to someone.

There are plenty of other hatters that can work on your hat for you, just do some checking around the Lounge. Optimo is one, but there are others.

What are the repairs the hat needs? If just a general cleaning and sprucing up, you could do that yourself following some of the how-tos around here.

Same thought here. There seems to be a loss of connection to the past that happens with hat stores, I have gone to some out this way and the sales people mis-use terms or have some odd ones for what i thought was pretty standard terms.

At the LB Village Hat Shop one guy used the term "Stovepipe" for what we would call "open crown." (I kept thinking stovepipe was the style of hat Pres. Lincoln was famous for wearing, how does that relate to an un-bashed crown? Must be related to all the people that think fedoras are cowboy hats...):eusa_doh:
