Josef Pichler & Söhne Graz, 56cm, possibly later 1930s early 1940s (see below). The hat is in NOS condition but unfortunately the brim was trimmed down to 2 inches. It came with the 1930s light green JHS "Standard Crystal Velour" I posted last week and was sold by the same store Rudolf Hanus Wien so it could be from a similar time period. The overall quality of this hat is high and the felt is fantastic (color, finish, hand). Josef Pichler was a brother of the more well known Anton Pichler.

Very lovely, Steve. Nice colour and a wonderful shape to that hat. Pity someone decided to shorten the brim.

As promised. Revisited Haarlem today to have another look at the Hückel Excelsior. The hat is just too small (even for me) so I did not add it to the collection. I did take some pictures though. An estimate of the dimensions would be brim at 6cm and crown 10 cm at the pinch. Lovely pliable felt with a lovely hand to it.

Looks rare, like something Steve would wear! Too bad about the size.

Steve, no problem. I was there anyway and I really wanted to make sure if I should not take the hat anyway (but storing all those hats is starting to be a bit of a problem). Obviously the hat is very dusty and a bit out of shape, but it would clean up nicely. I don't think it would stiffen up very much with steam. This was definitely designed as a soft felt hat. The felt was quite thin, not something I'm used to seeing on Hückel hats, and very finely pounced, but still with a bit of a nap to it. That makes it very soft to the touch. Sweatband of high quality and still supple. The older style ribbon and bow and liner give it away as an early hat. I retrospect I think the brim was a bit larger than 6cm, so probably 6,5cm.

Hello Gentlemen, I found a Lieser Hut Homburger Size 56 last Sunday.
It‘s a good old Hat in a good Condition. The liner is missed but it‘s ok. I think that Hat comes from the late 40s. The sweatband is very stiff and dry and I used a Leather Lotion for it.

Stefan, Thank you for the detailed follow-up! I have some smoother finish old JHS hats but none with this "Excelsior" mark. I have to look through my JHS post to see if there any others.

Manfred, Super find! I assume no paper label. I will have to research that mark. Did you find it the Dortmund Flea Market?

Friedrich W. Schneider Köln "Helium", Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 1/4 inches, probably 1950s. Friedrich W. Schneider (F.W.S.) Köln are still in business today and own the Stetson license for Europe. F.W.S. owned many trademarks (see below) going back to Pre WWII.

Yet again, a very nice hat, Steve. You wear them all so well. This one really suits you. Some really cool hat ephemera, too. Wonderful, iconic German advertising art.
