Interesting how very 40s looking the people looked in 1953 Britain.
I think people here looked like that in 1953 too. Maybe it's a European thing?
Just yesterday I saw a rack of throat drops made in Boston, England. Otherwise I would have guessed the road sign arrow for New York and Boston were one of those cute jokes we sometimes see.
I always figured there's a YORK in England, as well as a Hampshire, but NEW York too? How about that...

I'm pretty sure you would find alot of the city we have here in the US are named after cities in Europe...Unless of course they have Indian (as in american Indian) names... A lot of cities names have also been changed over time over here New York City didn't start out as New York City and such. (Amman, Jordan was once name Philadelphia way before Philadelphia, PA ever exsisted!!)
