A disciple of Veronica Lake. That particular hairstyle was all the rage in 1942, so much so that the OWI started a propaganda campaign against it -- long straight hair was dangerous for women working in factories, and they prevailed upon Lake herself to change her hairstyle in hopes of influencing her followers.

I asked my grandmother if all women set their hair in the 40s and she told me a lot of girls in her high school had hair like mine (straight, shoulder-length bob).

That was also a very big style on the college campuses from about 1941 on, a sort of straight curled-under pageboy. Any 19-year-old girl wearing knee socks, a sweater and skirt, and a single strand of pearls would probably be wearing her hair like that.

Well, I did mean the caption to be slightly tongue-in-cheek... surely some nights those coeds had better things to do than sit around rolling up their hair! lol But yes, this reminds me of that scene in The Major and the Minor, where all the girls at the dance have the Veronica Lake wave!

epr25, that is a great find!! I love her smart pantsuit with her rifle, ha! What a neat lady.

Is that where the "snood" comes in... to confine long hair, for instance when working near machinery?
When I was a kid we had two Afghan hounds, and my mom knitted a snood for each one-- to keep their long ears from dragging in their food bowls!

Love the grocery shopping -- that's an A&P store, judging from the "Sunnyfield Corn Flakes" in that lady's carriage. I suspect she has a rather large family, since she has two big boxes of cereal and one smaller one. Either that or she really really likes breakfast.

I'd love to know what Miss Mug-Shot of 1950 is in for. I suspect she made a pointed comment about the intelligence and/or ancestry of the cop involved.

Here's some moving, talking images of Everyday Women -- at 4:57 into the June 29, 1943 edition of Fox Movietone News, you'll see several women from various walks of life giving their views on whether women should be drafted (most of them endorse the idea.) Some of the ladies are wearing remarkable headgear, including a showgirl who could be a time-traveling Dita Von T., and another gal wearing what appears to be a feather from a large hawk or falcon as a hat.
