I can not believe that a Whippet went for 600 bucks. I would love to have a vintage whippet but I will settle with my custom clone that only cost me 140 bucks lol
And I'm overly happy with my $41 whippet... near mint... I can't imagine someone spending so much on one when you could easily get a better version custom made... and brand new...

OK, at least I'd expect a sweatband for the opening bid.

Ok. I guess she gets the last laugh as she sold a similar hat on the 17th for $99! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Perfectly-Aged-Western-Cowboy-Hat-Movie-Prop-Home-Decor-50s-60s-/150947200435?pt=Vintage_Men_s_Clothing&hash=item2325277db3&nma=true&si=Z2SNR2%2B1y95NQl8zgi0X9ZQGetI%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I've got a box of hats like that. And here I foolishly thought I needed to clean them and put decent sweatbands in first so I could get at least $20...time to sell 'em!!!

Yes, Whippet prices are insane. Not at all an especially interesting or special hat. You see similar crazes (often driven from this place) on other makes/models, but never quite so long running as the Whippet/Stratoliner/Playboy obsessions … none of them especially high quality hats. And none of them with dimensions or features unavailable or rare in other makes/models. People get fixated, I guess. Especially on Stetson, for whatever reason; a company whose felt after the middle 1930s left a lot to be desired, IMO. beofre that, Stetson felt is truly outstanding. Afterwards … not so much.

Good luck to the sellers though. Even in size 7 they sometimes sell quite well these days.

No Kidding, this one just sold for over $600. Amazing!!! I know beauty and value are all relative, but seriously the Whippets were $10.00 hats. There's nothing special about the felt or construction at all. The Stetson 100s don't even bring that much and their felt really is amazing. There is going to be some serious buyers remorse on this one.

I think it's market manipulation. A few hat insiders are driving up the price of certain hat prices to make a killing.

This should be investigated by the FEC, The Fedora Exchange Commission.

Juts picked up a vaguely whippet-esque Stetson for pretty cheap, eying it for a conversion.

Any ideas on the age of this one? It had me a little stumped because I couldn't quite make out the font on the size tag. The black sweat, square tag, and plastic on top could be as early as 60's but also as recent as 80's, no? It doesn't look like it has a blocked in crease though.

Fishing is right.....

Look at this sellers sale history of items sold and most of them have been sold with 'best offer accepted'. Doesn't look like the seller expects to get his listed price. So, just cut his price in half and make an offer. Although this hat may need to have the offer cut more than half.

This seller looks like it could be an experienced old ebayer with a new store....just a feeling.

Well less than half, in this case. I'd say closer to 1/10th the BIN price, seein's how it's a size 7 and it's really nothing special beyond being kinda old.

But, if that strategy gets the seller a good price, well, good for him or her, I suppose.

Yes, he used to sell under another name that I can't remember. He usually had some nice hats but his prices were always very high. I made him a decent offer (that wasn't too far off from his asking price) on one of his hats that was declined and it sat there for 3 or 4 months. I finally quit watching it and don't know whether he sold it or not. One of the things I noticed about some of his hats were that they were western hats that had been recreased into a fedora. Some were very obvious because you could still see the old cattleman's crease remnants in the pictures.

Hello all and Happy Thankgiving !

This came in the mail yesterday , I paid $15.00 bucks for it and $7.50 of that was shipping .

It looks like it could use a cleaning and possible reblocking .
I figure that I can't go wrong for at that price .

I was wondering what the experts here think of the deal ,did I do allright for the price ?
I am wondering because I see the hundred's of dollars in asking price for hats here in this thread and as a rule I try to not pay more than $50.00 unless I am really smitten by a certain hat and so therefore I have scored some really nice ,good quality hats for next to nothing.

I recently bought a black homburg like new ,super clean for $20.00 with the shipping.

All the Best ,Fashion Frank
