Am looking at several hats, all by the same wonderful seller. One widebrimmed Stetson, one black widebrimmed homburg, and a couple of stingies. I figure the stingies would be for more casual wear, the homboug would go well for dress occassions and the Stetson would go well for when I want to feel sassy but not be formal.

IIRC, it was listed higher, and that was a "Make Offer" price. I think I would have snapped it up for under $50.

I was gonna buy that one to resell myself. It would not have fit me but it would have been worth the price to turn it over. The seller just had a picture of the dang box and I almost missed the fact that there was a perfectly good hat in there too. Did you make him an offer or did you win it at the end of the auction. I lost track of it and when I checked on it it was already yours.

I received my Amon Carter Open Road today and it was as nice (if not nicer) than the pictures here:

The felt is very soft and pliable and the brim is very firm and snaps down very strongly. I've already sent the hat to a buddy on here to have it "Stratolined" to get rid of the cattleman crease. I'd do it myself but I don't want to start practicing my skills (or lack there of) on such a nice and expensive hat. I'll post pictures when I get it back. The 7 5/8 long oval fits me perfect by the way (sorry Tom).

You picked up a REALLY GREAT hat. Myself, I would have kept the original crease and just snapped the brim down in front mainly to have kept the historical aspect to the hat. But then I like the US Cattleman's crease

Oh, I'm not worried about that. I actually did what you suggested and it looked good. It has a great "snap" to the brim. It can always be put back if needed (but I'll never get rid of the hat). This hat fits me better than any other hat I own and will look sooooooooooo much like a strat when it's done (like all well bashed Open Roads) that only a trained eye (like ours) will be able to tell the difference. I'm just not the Cattleman kinda guy I guess.

I probably got hosed on this hat, but my curiosity got the better of me after doing a FL search for men's Merrimac hats. The sweat looks unnaturally fresh, and the liner was maybe just sloppily tucked into another lid, and the seller's rating is pretty low. A fool is born every minute, they say, and maybe 1960 was no exception.
