Hi Brad,

Can you speak more on the dating? I thought the 247 Park Avenue address would put it in the mid-30s. It was a great listing in a big size.

Sorry, my fault. I was thinking of a different hat altogether! Yes, this one dates 1936 or earlier. I don't know where they got the 1935 date from, as it could date to 1928.

I've been grading papers and exams non-stop since before Thanksgiving, so my brain is fried. At least that's over until January.

I believe the seller got it from one of your own posts.

You described this liner dating around 35-36

Aha, thanks! I should clarify that the particular hat with that liner is from either 1935 or 1936, though that liner tip could have been used as far back as 1928. It has the space for "Made By The Cavanagh Process," but is blank. I didn't mean for it to seem as if those were the only two years for that exact liner tip. I really don't know when that extra wording or the blank space for it disappeared.

Nice to see my work being put to use, though!

This one ended a while ago with no sale but I thought it worth archiving. This hat maker was out of East Germany (Ernst Gierisch, Zwickau) .

I contacted the seller and this is what he had to say. I will have to check back with him on the current situation.

Google translation.

"hello,

It is an ancient hatters and furriers (furrier) workshop, it was founded in 1887, all I have pictures on the ground was found in different chambers, there were produced until about 1960 hats and furs. I try this nice workshop closed for several weeks and sell it together but unfortunately this is not easy. It would be a shame to sell everything individually and tear apart. I'm still waiting for something then I have to go in the retail sale. 2 books in the small manufacturing concerns and care of fur.
salute to America,
regards uwe"

That's jawdropping, Steve!

Randall, I have no doubt you'll be satisfied in that Aristocrat. It looks awesome-- the brim is probably an inch shorter than a St. Regis, it seems, if the seller was correct at measuring it at 2 inches (probably a little wider if you figure in the curl). Looks cool!

Thanks, Jeff. She had it listed at $99, but it had no takers and I offered $50. No idea if I can pull off the look, but that bowler I got gave me some hope. :)

Alan, is The Kleinhans Co. still kickin' in Buffalo?

Wow, that is a serious stash of hat stuff. I'd love a stretcher like that.

Thought I'd try a hommie. Looks like 50's?

Great snag Randall! It's 1930s. You will love it. I have the identical hat, also from Kleinhans. It was one of the largest mens stores in the country at one time. Gone now.

Some additional photos here to tide you over while you wait for its arrival.

Made an impulse offer on this 3X Stetson, and the danged seller accepted it. The nerve! Looks like it might be a real nice fixer-upper. I can live with one moth divot on the backside.

Unfortunately Kleinhans is no more. Went the way of the doo-doo in the late 80's. Great men's store for many a year.

Doo-doo will be here as long as we are here to smell it, but dodos, not so much. :)

I wish I had been around during (and old enough to appreciate) the golden era of department stores. Must've been like in the movies.
