Before the '20s, even. Back bows were not uncommon on men's fedoras in 1900.

.

In the early 1931 version of the "Maltese Falcon" Sam Spade sported a back-bow fedora. In that version he was portrayed as a ladies' man.

Just won a nice Adam Homburg... older than a lot of the ones I've seen.

Not sure I needed another Homburg... [huh]

Of course you need another Homburg! You need one in every shade because you never know how the light's going to be on any given day and your ensemble will vary. You need a couple to have on hand with different brim treatments. You also need to have some to experiment with dents. And then the sizes will vary just a hair, so you need to have one for when you lose or put on a bit of weight in your scalp ....... ;)

Congrats on a handsome purchase!

Hooray!

A while since my last post, but I think I scored something worth sharing:

Because I need another hat like a hole in the head [huh] .
I hope I didn't submarine anyone here, but not so much that I'm gonna feel real bad about it when I get it on my head.:p

Nice looking Homberg, BS. I saw that one when it went up and decided it was probably a bit too big for me.

Sorry 'bout that. I put in sixty bones just KNOWING that there was gonna be a shoot out in the last five minutes and I was gonna lose it. I got a pang of serious "buyer's remorse" when I looked to see how it went down ( had two shirts bid on, as well ). The more I look at it though, the more amped I get.
A while back, I got a Fawn (?) Camp Draft because I really wanted an OR in ANYTHING but Silverbelly. I just never figured I'd score an OR this nice in a less available color. That Camp Draft will likely find it's way into the classifieds, if this is as nice as the seller claims.

I'm stunned - after buying two Open Roads in the last week, I laid off this one. Unless there's something really negative about this hat that wasn't advertised, you did great.

Not surprising, considering the very few (and not so great) photos, the complicated measurements, and the false description of the hat as bowler/derby. :eusa_doh:

ScottF, when you receive this great hat, could you please take and post pictures? Thanks!

.

All true, Marc. Still, we can't complain. Some of our best buys are the result of stumbling across poorly described items that noone else finds. In fact, some of the inhabitants of FL are skilled hunters of the obscure and the unintentionally hidden.

Nice one ScottF. Here is a shot of the Matteawan factory.

Thanks Buler - nice pics. Before I even bid, I spent about an hour googling 'Matteawan' and found quite a bit of stuff. The fire mentioned by the seller was actually at the Dutchess Hat Factory. Also found a rejected patent for a machine that added additional fur to a felt hat:

Rejected patent for fur-adding machine

Then a 1918 rejected suit regarding the same process (interesting read):

You done good. :) That was definitely on my radar. Will you try to push out the dents for just a traditional hom' center dent as well? I like the flat (non-smiley) brim on this hat also. I'm betting these pics don't do this hat justice. Looks like a nice rich brown.

Admittedly I don't have a brown one yet! :)

I'm hoping so. I did have 4 times that amount as my maximum bid, so was sure I'd win it! ;)
