East Coast - West Coast

The West Coast is warm. There's a part of me, the gardening part, that wishes I could have citrus, gardenias, citrus, camellias, palms, citrus, and banana in my yard.

But I love my hometown. I love pre-Victorian architecture. I love food that is horrible for you; kosher deli, old-school bagels, pizza and hoagies. Affordable houses. Public transportation. City laid out on a grid. I love that my family has lived here for five generations (though I attribute that to them being homebodies like myself; they got off the boat here then didn't budge an inch.)

My first and only taco salad made with russian dressing.

THE ORIGINAL POST: KINDA WANTED TO KNOW IF FOLKS OUT WEST ARE A DIFFERENT KIND OF BIRD THAN ME. I GUESS YOU'D HAVE HAD TO LIVE ON BOTH SIDES TO KNOW. LIKE AMERICANS ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE ENGLISH.

don't know about people in general, since I've never been to the east coast...but I do hear stories about your taxi cab drivers ;) :D

My granddad drove a Checker, one of the last in the city. Wrecked it once, the entire top from the top of the doors up was gone.

jamespowers, I think they were all "well, we're done with the boat, no more czar. Move? HELL no!"

Turns out this whole post is :eek:fftopic: Sorry.

Clevispin I grew up in St. Louis and it's the same crap- freeze your azz in winter and sweat it off in summer. In fact everywhere east of the Rockies is basically that humid and snow-sleet-hail-endless rain-nasty weather.

Southern California is absolutely perfect. It is the most temperate this side of Tahiti. Usually the last rain is March or April and you don't see it again till late December. There are many Christmases when you coulda cooked out! Anything grows easily here too.

All the rest of the drama that some have complaints about is no more distressing than the negative points about any place you live. You watch Cops same as me and see the same low lifes everywhere.

I used to enjoy telling native Californians about midwest summers with the oppressive heat how you sit on your front porch at 10 PM sipping iced tea sweating like a horse. Or the winter morning scenarios of getting a car dug out and cleaned off of snow and ice, hoping it starts, spraying junk in the door locks to melt ice so you can insert the key, hoping you have snow tires on and the slip n' slide to work and all the extra time needed for all that plus the shoveling snow and salt spreading misery associated with it.lol

And guess what? People are the same as back east since many are from there or their parents are.

The weather is the killer deal for me. i'd never go back to the midwest misery.:fedora:

I love the East coast. I love winter and snow and not feeling like I have to be sunny all of the time.

Yup. I'd like sunshine all the time for awhile. But gray skies and cold are good things as well.
I think it was the tag on my Stormy Kromer cap that said "Winter is just the thing for winnowing out the weak."

It all depends ...

I have found that when talking to people about whether they would like to live in a certain place, it is most revealing to ask them about the place they live. If it is ugly and populated by mean, back-biting, dispicable people then the new place will be too. However, if they hate to leave because of all the great people, places, culture, etc., they will find the same things wherever they go.

When traveling for a living, I found that once I got past the different accent and the stereotype, people are people.

Come on out and see for yourself. Then you can decide. Southern Cal is a lot more nicer than Northern. San Francisco Bay Area is filthy; there is a digusting brown smog that lingers over the hills, the water is lapping with sewage/mud. 50 years ago San Francisco was a classy place. Today, there are 1000's, not hundreds BUT 1,000's of homeless people like locusts all over the place. The homeless relieve themselves on the street and the cops look the other way. The sidewalks are crumbling. If you come out here RENT a car, because if you bring your own you'll have to get the alignment done because of all the crumbling roads and potholes. The freeways are filled with weeds and trash. The signs on the freeways are bordered with razor wire to keep the graffitti "artists" away. If you've been to Newark, NJ or Camden, NJ you've already been to Oakland.

I haven't been to the Northeast, but I've met many Northeasterners when I was living in Florida. People are definetley different. It took a while for them to get used to my "laid back" ways and a while for me to get used to their "unique" patterns.

You are sadly mistaken.

Everything you said is absolute hog wash. SF has a homeless problem, but not in the greater Bay Area. Roads are fine. Brown air, must be from something you are smoking.!! We have crystal clear air...only about three or four days A YEAR in the late summer, where they have a "spare the air" day. Other than that, it is fresh air 100%. When were you here last? 1966?

PS your profile says you live in the "Laughingist Place there is". Where is that? Fantasy Land?

Let's see, the last time I drove down the Nimitz Freeway from Oakland to San Jose the on/off ramps were filled with 3-4 foot weeds and trash littered the sound walls. 1966? Ah, what a beautiful time it was to be in San Francisco. There was the Hungry i, before it became a strip club, Union Square was filled with finely dressed ladies, Bimbo's was THE place to take your girlfriend on a date. Clayton and Concord were such pleasantly rural towns with ranches. Gladiola's bloomed in Union City. The Bayshore Freeway (Hwy.101) was a four lane road with a beautiful median. The Nimitz freeway had this wonderful little sign that read "Stop Casting Porosity". Everyone wondered what it meant? Something to do with a foundry I guess.[huh]

Give me four seasons, all of them cool please! Funny thing about where I live, it may be cold and windy sometimes, but the sun is pretty much always out. Plus I never feel dressed outside if I'm not wearing an overcoat.

Northeast for me, that's it. Maybe move around a bit within the Northeast, and visit other places, but all other places just seem like nice places to visit.

Besides, where can you get good corned beef on the West Coast?

I'll stick to the Rocky Mountain West, where we have all four seasons, plenty of cold weather, and little humidity!
