Bush Jackets

...I must confess that, for a long time, my beaten-up safari jacket was pretty much my signature item of clothing. Usually with jeans and a normal shirt...Was it a role play costume? I suppose it was. But everyone puts on a costume every day, saying a wide variety of things. And in my case my life eventually grew into the costume, at least to a small degree (which was enough for me.) So, yes, it was a costume..."
"Costume", or "uniform"? I suppose it depends on the wearer's mindset, but I've known people who treated their daily wear as one or the other; "costume" to the goofy types, "uniform" to those who took their "presentation" and demeanor more seriously. My own definition tends to change from day to day, depending on my mood when I wake and/or what I need to accomplish that day.

Just got this used jacket in the mail, ideal mid-weight (not too heavy, not too light/thin), overall a nice garment. However, it's a Large Tall, and the sleeves are 38.5" long, which is waaay too long for me. Sigh. You can buy them brand-new from Midway's website, just don't get the Tall unless you're an NBA player. MidwayUSA 11a.jpg MidwayUSA 11b.jpg MidwayUSA 11e.jpg MidwayUSA 11g.jpg

^ Regarding that MidwayUSA safari jacket, there's the measurements (tagged Large Tall):

chest 25"
length 34"
shoulders (pulled taut) 23"
sleeve 27"
sleeve underarm 19.5"
sleeve (dress shirt) 38.5"

Someone has the same jacket tagged XL Tall listed on eBay right now, and here's their measurements: chest 25" length 33" shoulders ~23" sleeve 27". That's more or less the same measurements as the coat I got. I'm thinking one of these coats must be mis-tagged. Weird.

That’s a nice looking jacket. I’m debating whether I “need” another one or not. :)
It's clearly a copy of a Willis & Geiger design, as seen earlier in this thread. I've got an Orvis which is 99% identical (although better quality), plus I've got a Duxbak incoming (fingers crossed) which is about 75% the same. Anyways, the Midway jacket is a good item, solidly made, not luxury but nobody here cares about that. The colour is a darker, flatter green than in the photos and despite looking a bit synthetic in the photos the cotton is nice to the hand in person. I guess I would recommend it? Affordable safari jackets don't seem really available anymore so it's nice to have this option, especially in different lengths (good luck). Midway doesn't seem to ship to Canada or I'd order a smaller size, so I'm stuck hoping one turns up on eBay.

Just got this jacket in the mail today, the brand is EMS. I know, I know, it's not a true bush or safari jacket, it's a fashion version, but it's decently made from a heavy 55% cotton and definitely retains the spirit.

Finally got this jacket washed up and snipped hanging threads, etc. Great fit, comfy, really nice. Only problem: the belt/ties on the front, when tied, pull the jacket over the bottom pockets. Fortunately, the back is elastic and with the ties untied the jacket shapes well, so I'll be removing those ties soon since they are basically useless.

Got this Orvis jacket recently, went through the wash, loose threads trimmed, etc. This is a good quality jacket, another of these Willis & Geiger design copies. It has a full length elastic cord with adjusters on the inside so the waist can be tightened as needed which is very useful since I have poor posture and jackets can sometimes stick out the back. Two inside pockets. Lightweight cloth which seems to repel water (when I accidentally splashed it a bit when it was dry the water beaded up). The colour is an orangeish-brown, as seen in the close-up photo of the tag. It seems to change colour in various light conditions, oddly. I'd prefer a green or a stone colour, but it will be fine. Too nice not to keep.

Just got this Duxbak safari jacket in the mail today. Doesn't have a size tag nor a content tag. Measures out good for me. It's made from a very heavy cloth, 100% cotton (found another one on eBay with tag), tough and good for colder weather. And the colour really is as depicted in the photos: grey, weathered, kinda like old denim... weird, but a nice change from brown or tan.
