Here’s the tag. What does this tell you? And how much would you expect to pay for it in the States? Prices aren’t really comparable, but I would be interested to know.

And we know it’s a long oval. The same hats sell for a range of prices, but a patient shopper can pick up similar 3X to 10X Beaver Resistols in the sub $100 range on the used market.

A few days ago, I bought a 7 1/2 black 4” brim 3X beaver western hat for just under $100. I normally wouldn’t have paid that much for it, but it had a band I plan to put on another hat and the band alone sells for more than $100 so.... It’s the shipping you have to watch out for. Some sellers want to charge over $70 for shipping!

My lesson learned from many years of Ebay bidding....winning and losing. The more I fall in love with an item the more I pay and often over pay. I have to keep telling myself, "set a limit on the $$$. If it surpasses that limit let it go"......items are like a bus....you miss one.....another comes along without too much of a wait.

My favourite western is a Beaver Brand, 7 3/8" black, short crown, wide (ish) brim. In decent shape, great felt, crappy hat band, paid about $50 including freight. I have been meaning to upgrade the band for about $30 more. I thought for $50 a good buy for a knockabout hat.

That it's called the roper, has a 4" brim, is black and size 7 1/2.

A mid range Resistol currently retails around $200.

Thanks for all your help. They’re asking about $US82. I think I’ll make an offer. The Resistol bus doesn’t stop here very often. The Stetson stops here occasionally, but usually costs an arm & a leg to ride.

What you need to do is find someone in the US whose mailing address you can use for your ebay etc. purchases. If after having several hats delivered to the US address, you have all the hats mailed to you in one box and can divide the shipping cost among multiple hats it’s a lot more cost effective.

How do you go about stacking several hats in a box?

My modus operandi is to offer a decent price at the low end of my limit but not too low as to insult the seller. As long as you don't insult them the door is open for a conversation to find out what they are willing to sell it for. As long as the shipping is not too stupid even the $82 is not a bad price for what looks like a nice hat. I am a big fan of Resistols….even over Stetsons.

Carefully ;)
For sure they will need a bit of steam and patience to bring them back, but most fur felt hats are resilient. It’s a good idea to wrap the crowns in plastic wrap to minimize damage to the ribbons and bows. It you’re taking stiff western hats it’s more trouble and fewer hats can fit in a single box. I have three boxes with twenty(ish) fedoras and homburgs ready you ship to a friend in Europe.

You don't want to store your hats stacked but for a short term shipping period no damage should occur. It is simple you just stack one hat on top of the next. In the shipping of hats as they weigh so little you are paying to ship the air around the hat. Most stock cardboard boxes have extra room in the height. If you place one hat loosely in a plastic bag then the felts won't be rubbing against each other and should survive the trip okay. If they do a little steam, reshape and good to go. Decent felt hats are very very forgiving.

Ok, so I have a question about how a hat should fit. I just purchased a Stetson Whippet and it arrived today. I been wearing it around the house and it seems to be a little snug on my forehead and the back as well. I measure right at 23" maybe even a tad less and thats a 7 3/8. Thats the size I ordered but I'm wondering after wearing it if I'm actually a "long oval". Well, since that is not offered, would it be alright If I went up to a 7 1/2 and used hat reducer if I need it?

Thanks

IMHO if you like the hat then the price with shipping included is very much in the fair price ballpark. I would negotiate as it makes it more fun. The only thing I don't negotiate is buying groceries....the checkout gals apparently don't have the authority to haggle.
¥1000 (close to $10) knocked off the price and purchase made!
Thanks for your advice.

Stetson hat sizes are different. For Stetson 23" is a 7 1/4. Everybody else 23" is 7 3/8.

Also, you didn't say if it's a new hat from Stetson or vintage. If it's vintage the sweatband may have shrunk a bit. If that's the case just wear it and it will stretch out. Actually the same is true if it's a new Whippet from Stetson.

If it's a new model Whippet it could also be a quality control issue. I've stood in a hat store looking at hats right out of the box from Stetson. Five the exact same model but different color felts. All labeled the same size. No two fit the same.

If it's just a "little snug" I would just wear it and let it stretch. If it hurts you may want to give it a little stretch or have it stretched.

Hey Bill,

Thanks for the reply. It's a new Whippet and after looking more closely, I can basically get a finger in each side while I'm wearing it so it's pretty clear long oval is where I need to be. That being said and the fact that Stetson doesn't offer that, I'm trying to decide what to do. I put it back on and gently applied some pressure to the sides to see if there was any relief and there was. However any pressure outward to the front and back caused the brim to buckle up and go into all sort of bad shapes. I was hoping that maybe I could have it steamed and blocked to long oval but I'm a bit worried about the brim.

Also with Stetson saying that 23" is a 7 1/4 and I have the 7 3/8 and it's a bit snug, I'm a little worried about the jump to the 7 1/2. I guess I can always return it again if it's to big.

For most of us, if a hat is just a little bit large, we put a cork or felt "shim" under the sweatband. That will usually buy you 1/2 a size, maybe a bit more. You can find 8x11 felt sheets for $.99 or less in the Crafts section of most big box stores like WalMart, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc.

This was my solution too after dropping 70lbs or so and about a hat size. Worked great to let me keep wearing my old bigger sized hats.

I would suggest the old method... as evidenced in some of my vintage hats that have arrived... of rolling up some newspaper to put behind the sweatband... but today they might say... what’s a newspaper?
