While not retro in terms of the eras we cover here; my boyfriend does occasionally dress vintage. As in, vintage 1600's.

It's nice to have guy who doesn't mind dressing in costumes. lol

Setting Priorities retro/non retro

Well, I set my sights on fellas who are at least interested in dressing vintage. Finding a fellow who dresses vintage is difficult. You likely already know him and he dated or married one of your friends! So my priority is does he like it when I dress vintage? Does he understand I am not wearing a "costume" ? I think I look darned cute (and so do others according to the comments). My BF is older than me and from stuffy DC. But the day he fell in love with me (he says ) was the day I showed up in a perfect fit 40s suit (appropriate to Jan weather) with hose, shoes, vintage protective rubber over boots, handbag, and 40s toy hat. Full make up. (It was a test) He absolutely loved it although he had never experienced it. (It could have turned out different of course)However, BF saw how good vintage can look. He now buys his own vintage clothes and is on Fedora Lounge too. But as for changing a man, just like any other new growth in a relationship, it takes care and clear communication.

My husband isn't retro at all, but that's okay. We met, when we wee 16 and in the deathrock scene, so there's something in common there. I love his look, though. He has dyed black hair and grey eyes. Swoon

He loves cars and knows everything about restoring them to their former glory. He just finished an old travel trailer, that I hope to borrow, but that's another thread.

I'm not retro all the time, but I have to say I look forward to being that '50's perfect woman ^_^. As far as my bf goes, he prefers to be more futuristic. He's more of a Neo (from the Matrix) wanna-be, but he doesn't have a problem with my retro fashions. He loves that my style is so ecclectic (I don't normally stick to any one retro fashion).

Why should it matter if one person's retro and another isn't? As long as you're happy and you have a good, healthy relationship, nothing should keep you apart.

I saw this really cute boy (compared to me he was aboy) at a benefit the other night and his pomp made him look like a very young George Harrison.
He had the cowboy boots and tight jeans like George wore too.

I wanted to Bump this Thread

Because of my fiance. He does not dress in a vintage fashion but he absolutely loves when I dress up. Well, today he said, "So when are you going to get me an outfit?" He wants to be able to dress up with me. I didn't really know where to post this, so I thought maybe this would be a good thread.

Since he's shown interest I thought maybe I'd get him a "starter" outfit so he has at least one and he can see if he likes it or not. The problem is I have no idea where to begin. I've been looking through the men's clothing forums but I'm lost. I'm still learning about women's clothing, I have absolutely no clue about men's! Can anyone suggest an inexpensive starter look for him?

I'd really appreciate your help, thanks in advance!

No, and I wouldn't have it any other way. He likes rap and hair metal, he isn't vegan or vegetarian, he's Catholic whereas I'm not.. and he's perfect the way he is.

Christy - I think men are lucky (or maybe unlucky?) in that their styles have never changed as often or as extremely as ours do. Their fashions aren't as fickle, so your beau could probably do fine wearing a normal suit he already owns, but adding a vintage feel with accessories. A hat, maybe a vintage tie or square pocket, and some spectator shoes.

my man is not vintage dressed, he is my old punk ( camo pants, skull tee, fitted jeans listening Conflict and other UK loud punk bands ) BUT he loves really 40s and 50s looks and make up. He collects 50s clocks and ceramic since a long time. So my 40s early 50s look is really sexy for him. He's a good guy and i know why i choose him ....

My husband isn't retro at all but he does like my vintage dresses, suits and coats etc. although it did take him a while to get used to me doing my hair in Victory Rolls! I think he definitely prefers when I wear wiggle dresses and do more of an Audrey Hepburn style with my hair - it's less of a shock I think!

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before...

My boyfriend and I met when I was in my "who am I really" phase. Since we've been together, i've developed more of my 50's sense. I have always loved vintage and retro stuff, but it's now gone further then just clocks and pictures of Marilyn. Its progressed to curler sets, high waisted jeans and shockingly red lips. He was just a standard army guy, with the standard army haircut and jeans and t-shirt outlook, until we went shopping to one of my favorite rockabilly stores. HE WENT NUTS! Shirts, and jeans, and shoes and pomade...i don't even recognize him anymore! He looks great! We've started living together and we've even started collecting vintage things for the house. He loves old movie posters and so do i! We had to compromise on somethings, and negotiate on others. But so far so good!
Here we are at my birthday. His hair is longer in the front now and is in the process of growing into a sweet pomp. He's my dreamboat <3

No he is not, well, he does really like it on me and we do like the same music and think pretty much in the same way.
I wouldn't want him to change his looks at all, I like vintage on guys too, but I still prefer the look of metalheads, in fact if you look at it this way, they are even more retro, since they look like they came out of the middle ages or even like cavemen I think I would die if he cut his hip lenght hair off

Still I am into vintage looks and decoration, but not so much into the housewifey part of it, I mean I do like to cook and keep a clean home etc, but so does my BF, we do split chores close to a 50%. I think he would feel really uncomfortable if I wanted to change that. Not that I would want to

The only things I have allowed myself to introduce him to are button up shirts (working on the waistcoats no progress on that one ) and cocktails
