A few questions

Hello, this is my first post here and I would like to say hello. I also have a few questions, and these questions may be on the sacrilegious side of things.

1. Is it a faux paus to run a ribbon through a black fedora? Example: I have a emerald green ribbon running around my fedora because it is Saint Patrick's Day this month.

2. I wear mainly blue jeans as part of my everyday dress. Can I wear a fedora with blue jeans. I have been wearing my black fedora with them, but I also have a black leather bomber jacket I wear with it. Now that the weather has been warming up I can no longer wear the jacket.

3. If I can wear blue jeans, what color fedora would go best with them. I was thinking a navy blue or a gray fedora.

Thank you

Green on black can look good, IMHO.
I wear fedoras & jeans all the time. I think Silver Belly is a great color for jeans cause you can wear all colors of jackets with them. I also wear greys, browns, greens & blacks with blue jeans, khakis & even black jeans.
I do usually wear black cowboy boots with black or grey hats & brown boots with brown, green & silver belly, tho.

Welcome!

I wear fedoras with jeans all the time. I wear all colors of hats although I tend to stay mostly in the browns and blacks. All color hats go with jeans just like all color shirts and shoes go with jeans.

Personally I don't see a problem with adding a (tasteful) green ribbon to your fedora for St Pat's day, or you could always get a green hat instead (or 2 or 3) which is what I did :)

1. Do you mean that you wrapped a green ribbon around the regular hat ribbon? I'd say that's OK as long as it looks good.

2. Yes, there is no problem with wearing a fedora with blue jeans. As long as the hat goes with the rest of what you're wearing, it's fine.

3. Again, just about any color fedora will go with blue jeans, so it mainly depends on what color shirt, shoes, belt, etc., that you have on. Gray is the most versatile.

I always say that he only thing that doesn't go with blue denim is more blue denim.

My opinion, and my opinion only:

I have a friend who is a sharp dresser. His clothes are immaculate (and expensive), tasteful and ever-present. This is 365 days per year. It isn't a phase he is going through. He dressed well in high school. It's who he is. He does NOT wear a hat. Ever. If he did, I would be rightfully justified in saying, "What's up with the hat?". Why? Because it would be out of character for this man, just as dressing in jeans would be out of character for him.

My point is this: if a fedora, or any other hat or accessory, is "just a part of who you are," then I don't believe there are any hard and fast rules that apply to you. I would say you can weave the ribbon, wear the jeans and basically handle "your" hat however you see fit. I'd simply say these are all stylistic choices for an individual that wears hats.

If a fedora, or any other "accessory" is part of an ensemble that you are wearing for a particular occasion, to project a specific image, then yes there are probably rules of dress and decorum that you need to follow.

Me personally, I wear my hats with jeans, and a button down shirt all the time. My hats are worn solely for me, and not for the benefit of others. In fact, my wife doesn't like me in a hat (or for that matter, with a mustache).

Make sense?

Ok thank you. My fedora actually doesn't have a hat ribbon. There is a loop for one, but it is also a cheap hat from Target so go figure. Well, I guess I am looking for a Gray fedora on the cheap(er) side of things. I am student working through college so disposable income is not exactly something I have a lot of. Is there a brand of fedora you would recommend or a good website to order from? The closest hat store is in the Dallas area, which is about 3 hours south from where I live.

for good hats at an entry level price point that are actually really good hats check out the Akubra vendors, especially the ones in Australia. Hats Direct and Everything Australian seem to be the most popular. Right now you can get a hat from Australia with shipping for less than the American sellers charge for just the hat.

There is also a Stetson outlet store somewhere in Texas I believe but I'm not sure exactly where.

Or there's always ebay ;)

Stetson/Resistol Outlet

If you can find out the size you need with some degree of accuracy, I've had great results just calling the Stetson/Resistol outlet in Garland, TX and having them look for the model I want in my size. They ship for about $10, and I've saved up to 70% on some hats. It will save you the drive. Frank

Hmm, so to find my hat size, I should be able to go to a tailor and have them measure my head I'm assuming?

You can measure it yourself. Find a piece of string or a belt, wrap it around and then measure. Of course if you've a measuring tape that would be better. Then use the scale to work it out.

If you feel you're between sizes, go for the larger one, you can always pad the sweatband.

Edit: Someone got there first!!

Awesome. Hopefully with spring break next week I will have some time to sit down and find me a new hat. Thank you very much.

As everyone else said, you can wear a fedora with anything you want.

As for colour I would not base it on your pants. If you are going to base it on anything I would base it on your shoes. If they are brown, go for earth tones. If Black, go for blues/grays. If running shoes, go for whatever you want.

Your hat does not have to match anything you wear. It should match you.

I suppose that's true to some extent, but you know the really right color is red (I mean really red, not `wine' for goodness sake!) You will note that baseball caps are frequently seen in predominately red color schemes, and are of course they will normally be worn with blue jeans.

I was a college student once myself. I fully understand the absence of income thing. If it were me, I'd make do with whatever hat I had at the moment and, when I could, scour the local thrift store, Goodwills, antique stores and collectible houses for good used fedoras. I don't do that nearly enough, but even the few times I have I've seen some astonishingly good deals on really nice hats (albeit not my big headed size). You might get lucky and find what you want for very little money.

And there are tons of threads on here about how to find your size, clean your hat, shape your hat, even refurbish your hat...all for little to no dough. Like everything else college folks do, make it an adventure. You might find a few great pieces of clothing too.

Texas...spring break...hmm... You might want to look for a straw fedora, in the interest of comfort. Something like this, maybe.

It's almost spring, so you might want to wait until fall to find yourself a nice felt fedora, and for now get a good straw fedora or panama to help keep your head cool.

Straw for warmer weather

I have to agree with Mr. E Train. Your in the south and warm weather is just around the corner. You wont be comfortable with a fur felt on. Around Easter I get out the Panama or Milan Weave.

Some people are comfortable in felts in summer, as an aside.

As for green on black... you be the judge. Yes, I know it's less emerald and more OD:

(And blue jeans, despite what some will tell you here, are wondrously useful bits of clothing! They go well with all kinds of stuff, including fedoras. I'm a big fan of earth tones with them, but greys work just as well. And probably just about every other colour as well, come to think of it.)
