Fantastic score, and for its original price in the 1940s, to boot. Let me know for how much you'd sell it to me. I used to have one without the carrying case which I regret selling a few years ago to another lounger.
Hello, fedoracentric.
I own a Knox 100 with the case, in your size, (7 1/8). The problem is that I don't know whether I am ready to part with it. I also own a Cavanagh 100 and a Stetson 100 with case. The Knox is the best of the three. Did you have a price in mind? It is nearly perfect.
Alan, I thought I'd give you an update. This Montecristi ranks waaay up there on my list of eBay bargains. The WPI is 1000+ and the best part of it is that the weave is soo uniform throughout!! The hat has no damage whatsoever, just that attractive age patina. It is still soft and not dried...
Alan, it should be arriving tomorrow. I will let you know its actual size. I am hoping the seller was very inaccurate in measuring it but its too much to hope for a 7 1/8. Will have to learn how to get photos on this site to share my good fortune.
small, panama with a nice patina for peanuts
I snagged this fine Montecristi...I counted over 900 wpi, might even be 1000!! I think Mr. Fawcett will be getting this one for enlargement and a new sweatband. Can't wait to get it. Incidentally, I actually bid a LOT higher--Brent Black...
WOW! That may never happen again. I've seen empty cases sell for more than that. A nearly perfect one with case, keys and insert sold for $640. the last week or two.
Thank you, Alan. Yes, 3 inch brim. I'll soon be selling a Stetson 100 with the leather case and keys but with a missing plastic "thing-a-majig", size 7. Can't tell the difference in the felt quality from my 7x CBs, and it is too tight on me; time to let someone else enjoy it.
I know you...
$75.00, shipped. Received today and it is nearly new with only a couple of smudge/dirt spots which should come off after steaming and brushing. These 7x CBs are pure joy to behold. This one has the embroidered lining and looks to be a late '50s or very early '60s. It's my third 7x and the...
I would think late '70s or early '80s. I have one with the same liner and sweatband from Worth & Worth, in NYC. They were still making a great hat in those days.
Robert,
it looks great on you, it never looked better. I am really happy you ended up with this wonderful hat and that it is with someone who can really appreciate it.
I resolve to sell at least 50 of my hats which are not in my regular circulation and which are either too small or too large...and NOT buy another 50 hats to replace them.
I guess that's true but I do have several 7 3/8 Stetsons that I fished out of the Bay. Perhaps you should give the Penman hat Co. a try. There's a thread on this forum which is very positive on John Penman's hats, and is particularly positive about his turnaround time and customer service...
My solution, after having seen and felt many, many hats--I own more than 130-- is that you are a lot better off buying a vintage fedora, at a fraction of the price of any of the custom hats that are discussed on this lounge. This conclusion is reached after having owned, felt and closely...
I have replaced three of my own sweatbands and I can tell you that the wavy effect takes place when the sweat is larger in circumference than the crown size, i.e., 7 1/4 size sweat for 7 1/8 size hat. It took me a couple of attempts before I got it right. I learned to carefully wrap the...
Ditto that statement. I used the very valuable tutorial on the naphta bath to clean several hats, very succesfully. The sweatband should be moisturized with leather softener immediately after complete drying.
Yes, I hated to part with that Whippet and was a little surprised it only went for $250.00 with 26 watching the auction. I'm glad a fellow lounger got it. Another lounger kept asking me questions on it but never jumped in...his loss your gain. Wear it in good health. I never wore it because I...
You are right about the screaming sweatbands, but I just want to show that they are still attached and supple, and because I lack dexterity, it's the only way I can take photos of the labels under them. But you make a very good point and I should heed the "screaming". I am VERY VERY careful...
Alan, you are absolutely correct, the Royal Stetson DeLuxe is the beauty of the bunch--unfortunately it doesn't fit my 7 1/8 noggin so I reluctantly need to part with it. The "Diamond" model is also rare, I believe. I leave that last comment to those more Stetson savvy.
