I have them on my two pairs of 1000 mile boots and my (very experienced) cobbler lightly sanded the soles before gluing. After a year they seem to be holding fine.
I like them and have them on most of my leather soled shoes (typically Allen Edmonds).
Yeah, as my tailor said to me "you did it to yourself" (a lifetime of bodybuilding/weight-lifting). I am definitely not a clothes horse but at least my hats fit well!
Other factors to consider besides overall height. I am 5'7" and have an especially hard time finding stock jackets (and all clothing for that matter) that fit well since I am fairly wide and broad chested with a 14" drop from chest to waist. Almost everything is too big at the waist. It is hard...
While I really like my custom Cordova caps, Hanna hats are a great place to start and a very good value. Lots of colors and several styles and often available (new or used) on ebay.

A bit off topic but I have always been drawn to the various Scottish tartan styles. I have several clothing items in this style (ties, scarves, jacket linings) but I feel somewhat like a "poseur".
I wonder if there were any Italian or Sicilian clans? :)
Good luck with the surgery and recuperation Art!
After years of heavy weight-lifting I may be faced with shoulder surgery someday as well. (As of now, lots of pre- and post-workout stretching along with several warm-up sets and aspirin before bed has fended it off.)
Here is an Eastman B3 up for auction on ebay:

Not sure what a homburg version of the FED IV means (dimensional brim, high crown?) or would look like, but Akubra already makes a homburg. It is available via Hats Direct:

While I am a big proponent of Akubra...
Not me sir. I learned a long time ago to avoid discussing politics, religion, gun rights, and a few other topics with others outside my family and friends.
