    What Happened....

I get what you're saying, but I've also done business in enough different cultures around the world to know there is value in getting to know the customs and culture of those with whom you seek to do business. At the end of the day relationships mean everything, and showing some knowledge of the...

    What Happened....

If life was like you describe, I would find that to be a miserable existence. Our world wasn't like that at all. We weren't class warriors and genuinely enjoyed meeting new people, talking to strangers, and the hospitality of others. It's just who we are.

    What Happened....

You don't put your elbows on the table, you don't chew with your mouth open, you wipe your feet, you take your hat off, you say thank you... Not because it makes you feel superior, but because it's not all about you. It must be different up in Maine, but where I'm from social interactions with...

    What Happened....

But manners aren't something one does to signify social status, at least it wasn't where I grew up. Even if you were a bum off the street you knew not to put your elbows on the table, to say "please" and "thank you" and to take your hat off when you walked into someone's home. This doesn't...

Keeping ants out of your house-

Ants are also attracted to electricity. Every so often I have to replace the contactor switch on the A/C unit or the well pump pressure switch because ants have crawled up there and shorted it out.

    What Happened....

I like to turn the food snobbery around. If you don't like collard greens and cornbread, or grits with butter and black pepper, you're just an uncircumcised Philistine who ought not be allowed to darken the doors of our hallowed establishments. Go eat your raw fish and tofu salad while reading...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Humidity is good for your skin and hair. It may make you sweat and frizzy, but it's more healthy than the dry. It also helps prevent an aged look. There may be no fat people in Colorado, but everyone looks like they're 100 years old. Girls in their mid 20s I'd swear were late 50s at best.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

When I was a kid, it was rare to find another kid who *hadn't* had their tonsils removed. On a side note, my niece had hers removed last week at the age of 25.

    What Happened....

I realize my experience is very atypical, but the saying in my profession was always "nobody cares where you did your undergrad, your grad school is all that matters". Well, I've enjoyed a nice career, and not only does nobody care where I went to school, I've never been once asked by an...

    Musician's hats

Nelson was often unfairly labeled by critics as a sort of poor man's David Bowie because his music was progressive and he somewhat resembled Bowie physically, which was a disservice to both of them. I've introduced people to him and they say "wow, where has that guy been all my life." Arguably...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I got it for free for switching power companies, but I think they run about $250 retail. Pretty steep but it's a pretty cool device. It "learns" your patterns and when you're home and when you're out and programs itself. You can check it/set it/change it from online or from your phone also...

Am I the only member who doesn't wear a hat?

    Berets and scruffy beards. Touché.

    Musician's hats

One of my all-time favorite guitar players...Bill Nelson, most famously from the 70s prog/glam band Be-Bop Deluxe:

Am I the only member who doesn't wear a hat?

The US military's use of berets comes directly from their use by the British military in WWII. The British originally used them as a practical matter for use in tanks, where head room was limited. I don't recall it ever being deemed a "commie" look.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I have one. It's called the "Nest", and it's a pretty simple "left to lower, right to raise" dial. It's a digital readout though, so Lizzie might not like it. But I do.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

It's like the emails that promise a Nigerian prince will give you $5 million AND show you the path to natural male enhancement...it's got to be working, or they'd move on to another scam.

    What Happened....

My parents did that with me. Told me I'd have to pay rent, then still live by their rules. In what universe did they think *that* was going to fly? If I was paying my way, I was gonna *do it* my way.

    What Happened....

I don't think it's that they're complete knuckleheads, I think it's that 90% of industry work is repetitive or process oriented and doesn't require any real creativity. What they deal with aren't problems in the sense that they have to figure out a solution. It's more a matter of...

    What Happened....

90% of the engineers out there aren't creative at all. They can massage the numbers you give them, follow the steps in the plan, and tell what the computer says is the answer, but they cannot figure things out or usually even know which questions to ask. They are simply human calculators. But...
