    Terms Which Have Disappeared

We "trade" at a "grocery store" where we push around a "buggy". We "give money" for them, then "carry" the groceries home in a "sack".

I occasionally get/have to work with them. They feel the same about lawyers. I'm just glad everyone loves geologists.

It's entirely about numbers. If one person dies in a single engine plane crash, it's not a huge story, probably just a local story. If 300 die in 747 crash, it's all over the international news. That may be a sad commentary on our society, but that's not the reporters' fault really.

You know you are getting old when:

Cuban cigars are still not available in the US, at least not legally. Their top of line smokes are still considered the best in the world, but due to the embargo many fine cigars are being produced out of other places such as Honduras and Nicaragua. And speaking of cheap cigars...I remember...

You know you are getting old when:

The Gulf brand was owned by Chevron and licensed to Cumberland Farms, jobbers out of Massachusetts. In 2010, Chevron sold the name outright to them and I think just last year Cumberland Farms sold the name to someone else. The Gulf stations you see now have no connection whatsoever to the Gulf...

You know you are getting old when:

Most stations today make their money at the convenience store. They sell a lot of fuel, but the profits on gas are razor thin. Junk snacks on the other hand...

You know you are getting old when:

The number of gas stations in the US has drastically shrunk, a good bit of it in the last 20 years. In 2004, there were about 210,000 gas stations in the US, today there are about 150,000. The number of pumps has increased at each station, and about 85% of stations are attached to some sort of...

BBQ Grills, and more specifically, Kamados

Flower pot glazes can contain toxic substances, such as lead, but I'm not sure they'd get into your food from BBQing in them. It would take prolonged direct contact with something acidic to leach anything out of the pot. And unglazed clay pots can also contain chemicals and metals that are...

BBQ Grills, and more specifically, Kamados

You can also drill holes in ceramic, if you don't feel there are enough, then plug them up with aluminum foil to control air flow. It's easier on the unglazed terracotta, but you can do it on glazed too. It's pretty low tech, but works just fine. And there's always some satisfaction in...

BBQ Grills, and more specifically, Kamados

That's pretty much it. Metal simply dissipates heat too quickly to hold the kinds of temperatures that ceramic can. You can make a pretty effective homemade kamado out of ceramic flower pots. I've even seen a toilet used as one. I hope it was a new one.

Science Fiction Genre - Religion vs Scientific Origins, and the Nature of Self Destruction

Chapman is an unapologetic bringer of the gas. Exactly what I want in my closer. You lucky Devils.

Hmm...you don't say...*wink* *wink* I'm a huge fan of PKD, more so than of any other sci if writer.

Science Fiction Genre - Religion vs Scientific Origins, and the Nature of Self Destruction

When it comes to science fiction, I prefer the questions "what does it mean to be human?", "what does it mean to be non-human?", "what are we?", and "how would we know the difference?" I know that doesn't answer your questions.

BBQ Grills, and more specifically, Kamados

Weber kettles are nice for lots of things, but there is simply no comparison between them and ceramic kamados when it comes to heat generation, control, and retention. It's like comparing a Toyota Corolla with a Ferrari in a street race. The kamados can easily reach temperatures of 750+...

It's all about supply and demand. There's only one of you to go around.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I've known numerous women who worked their way through college as strippers. Earning $1,000-1,500/night a couple of times a week was preferable to earning $60-80/night waiting tables. I don't know if they felt empowered at all, but none of them complained about the money.

You could be on a plane from Boston to LA in the morning for $368, and be there before lunchtime. Not sure how long it would take you to get to Boston, however.

    What Happened....

I get the disdain for what we'd call the "carpetbaggers" or the "halfbacks". And as a native Floridian, who's family was there well before it was even a US possession, I certainly understand the interlopers wanting to change your culture.

I'll never understand how we Baptists learned to tolerate each other so well without getting liquored up.

    What Happened....

Apropos to nothing, but...here we often greet each other by our formal names. So I would say "good morning Miss Elizabeth". It would be a sign of a personal relationship and one of genuine affection, not a cold deference to authority. Of course I might also say "howdy Lizzie". We like to mix it up.
