Aging beautifully and gracefully, then vs now: Who did it better?

Isn't this the guy-Monte? - on "Say 'YES' to the Dress"?

OMG! Is this the ladies' forum? Excuse moi!

Aging beautifully and gracefully, then vs now: Who did it better?

Amen, brother. My recently deceased mother (93) had a cure for this that involved a Lorena Bobbit-like solution. Me? I think a good Cable TV hookup, maybe a good sports package, and control of the remote (I can't seem to get it away from Mrs. F, who insists on endless Big Bang Theory), is...

Aging beautifully and gracefully, then vs now: Who did it better?

Unfairly, perhaps, men often age better than women. Think Sophia Loren or Racquel Welch as notable exceptions, and there is the comically enhanced Joan Rivers, but more Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and even James Caan. Yes, well Al Pacino and Robert Redford fell apart early, and...

    That vintage feeling

For me, it's the (I'm sure purely imaginary) psychic sensation of being one with the past, triggered by some image, sound, or fragrance, even lighting. Like a handstand or attention to a Paul Rudd movie, it's impossible to sustain for long.

    Synthetic suits - Thoughts?

I believe NASA astronauts and Navy divers wear suits of synthetic materials but I would avoid them otherwise. Maybe a blend with mostly wool.

    Film Noir Favorites

Glad to see They Drive By Night-very under-appreciated movie; Blade Runner is modern noir, very well done and this citizen's cult favorite.

Do you have a favorite vintage movie car?

I'm going to pile on for this one (Bogart's 'Big Sleep' 38 Plymouth P6), as well. It looked so tiny inside but was probably fun as hell to drive. Anyone reading this ever drive one or similar?

Bespoke tailor barely scraping by in New York

$50K with NYC cost of living? Some of us in The Flyover would imagine that's subsistence, with no dependents, living at the Y, in Gotham. This is a dying trade, or 'art' or what have you. It's a great pity but only a pampered few will ever pay what that quality is worth and unless you can...

    Wearing vintage at home.

Weekend wear: Those ridiculously overpriced replica vintage 1927 Levi's. Feel like Tom Joad without the prison chip on my shoulder and grit in my teeth.

    The Untouchables TV show

The clothes seem pretty good and why not? The original styles were only 30 years old, not that hard to find or copy. Let me recommend the DVD sets as a way to time travel to a wonderful era of TV drama that's a little cheesy by today's standards but a lot of fun to watch.

What sparked your fascination with the "Golden Era"?

Wet blankets easily criticize nostalgia by highlighting the things that were wrong with an era. Who the hell wouldn't want to live in a time, not that long ago, when grown-ups were in charge, wore wonderful clothes, especially hats for men, drove great cars. cheap or fancy, of character...

A Cocktail that has really grown on me: The Bloody Mary

BM's (well, read that as you will) are a real treat. Best served with a small beer chaser.

    Bring back the clotheslines!

Nothing more wonderful than sheets and clothes drying in the country air. Nothing worse than the steam train blackened sheets and clothes hung to dry a block from the track. I know.
