I think this is an interesting sociological observation. Granted, we don't have the rigors of science for this anecdote, but I would like to say I see this alot too. It seems major purchases ($200+) which a person believes are necessary are placed on credit, while minor purchases are scrutinized...
But certainly the flip side in today's society is, "Thank god the kid's got shoes on!"
I think that's the point Feraud was making. I agree with you MC, but when you can't go to a funeral without seeing at least one vulture in jeans and crocs, it's hard to imagine a world where folks wear...
My main concern, and something I mentioned in the General Decline thread, is that folks today simply don't have the necessary skills to make do. I don't think we would have people running amok, but I could certainly see crime and starvation increasing.
I mean, imagine if something as simple...
A 'Dear Abby' for the down and out
It's a cool story, but it got me thinking - isn't this how communities worked during the Depression? People band together and help one another out. People that have, give; people that need, ask.
I know I try to do my part and I'm sure many of you do too...
I've seen this. I think they may have been handmade, but I've seen a pair of OD wool socks with little pockets. lol I'm not sure what they were used for, but I can only imagine something pretty small.
Was this something that changed recently? Just curious.
I'm sure Norwegians (middle-aged generation) would recall the Varg Vikernes trial in which he was tried and convicted of murder, as well as a number of church arsons. I believe he was sentenced to 21years, and served 16. That was in the...
That picture of GW Carver almost (ALMOST) looks like some of them are wearing overcoats.
I am the very last person on the FL to be familiar with sartorial history, but do those jackets not look like overcoats - or at least plain outerwear? And they are buttoned quite high, with what appears...
Well...not to play devil's advocate, but...
Hopscotch
Really funny film with Walter Matthau. Granted, it's not about the game, but there is certainly an element of back-and-forth, "catch me if you can" throughout.
I would recommend it to anyone. It's good, clean humor.
I could be wrong, but I believe our own Marc C. has donned a pair of spats in the past.
Garters? Didn't the Baron used to wear sleeve garters? Or am I remembering a picture wrong?
Not to play devil's advocate, but of all the families I've known, they do make an attempt to dress well at the funeral of a dear one. Even when they were wearing cardboard in their shoes to block the holes and shirts that didn't fit - they still had the presence of mind to dress accordingly...
Edward, in this regard, you and I are of the same mind. Do with my corpse what you will (preferably burnt and spread or fed to wildlife...or maybe a Viking burial...), but don't fret over me with tears. What is this but an illusion?
Rue, I completely understand your feelings on the floral...
I read the Rum Diaries shortly after the release (or rerelease?), and I had a great laugh. It was definitely a green book for Thompson, and you could see hints of his style beginning to peek through, but it was alot of fun. I can only imagine it will be an interesting film.
