It's quite difficult to avoid politics when discussing the economy/economic theory, isn't it? I suppose that is a major pillar of politics, after all.
I already give to charities, I already give money to the homeless, the destitute, and even to "free-loaders" just looking for a $1...
Thought it might be interested to revisit this thread.
Personally, I have found it's easier to replace broken items with vintage ones, so my "collecting" hasn't been impeded, per se. I've also discarded some cheaply made items for more expensive alternatives that will last until I die.

Now there's an idea! Trust-fund hipsters throwing away Macs!
I knew you had a Mac, Lizzie, but it hadn't occured to me how simple it must be to fix them if you're finding tossed ones. I should stay on the prowl for these things.
Flicka, I hear that alot too - about the TV. I don't use the thing, so why should I have one?
Well, I broke down back in 2008 and bought one on sale (so I could watch old Hitchcock movies, duh! lol). But I've never had cable, and I don't use it to actually watch programs.
Now I'm that...
Same here. I have the 8111 Iron Rangers. They were a D width, my usual size, and they required a bit of breaking in. After about a month of wearing them everywhere, they started softening up. I used he Red Wing Leather Dressing when scuffs would appear, and this application not only gave the...
From what I've seen of Minneapolis, specifically Uptown, I was fairly impressed. There's a decent vintage community and some fellow loungers there. The architecture is really something special, too. My lady currently lives in a residential hotel built in the 20's. Great place, great people. All...
Oh yes. It's sad, really, the disparity between the poor in Western societies and their cigar smoking, golf playing, Lambo driving counterparts. But I wonder...
The folks that can't afford proper shoes, what are their priorities? Where is their money going? Why can't they mend and make do? Is...
Although I'm sure this is a little off topic, it fits in with what you're saying Lizzie.
Poll: Catching criminals is fine, but don't use drones for speeding tickets, Americans say
"So if they keep beating the drum, we just keep marching?"
"You got it, Mac."
How does this fit in? Well...
I am not surprised in the least. Look at Jose Cuervo Gold - 51% blue agave, 49% "distilled spirits" aka vodka. You can call Cuervo tequilla until you're blue in the face, but it's really just window washer. Same pretty much goes for bourbons.
Boy, a nice bourbon on the rocks sounds fantastic...
Right.
People have this insane mindset that they need *new* things. "Old stuff" is seen as dirty, grubby, eccentric, disgusting.
The Men on Madison (and some women too, I'm sure) have tapped our vein and they'll just keep pumping this sludge into the collective bloodstream.
This...
Ah, again, I don't disagree entirely but I don't think our model is as rigid as we make it.
Granted, current Asian production is low quality, high output, bottom line junk that's meant to be thrown away two years after it's purchased when a bakelite housing melts due to a bad wire connection...
I don't entirely disagree here. What was once affordable and of high value to the average American 50 years ago is now priced just out of reach.
However, you and Sheeplady argue that there are no choices as a result and thus we as consumers are bound to these purchases. Your example of the...
Ah, I see! I think I must have misunderstood your previous posts. I think we're right in line with one another. There are number of Loungers with this mindset. Who knows, maybe we'll make a change in the world?
