    Walking Sticks & Canes.

Evan. In my neck of the woods, blackthorn does not exist. I'm not even sure you can find it any where in NA. I also have wanted one, only places I could find offering them are in the UK. However, we do have the odd bit of hawthorn in these parts. It is quite difficult to find a piece strait...

Alright Pipe Smokers. It's the question that has destroyed countless friendships.

Righto Chaps. As a kid (actually still am one, but a bit older) matches were a source of much delight, match guns not the least. But modern matches are nutin' but a frustration. Those old ones lit like a rocket, first time every time.

    Nineteenth Century Explorers' equipment

Great thread, great pics. As to the NY hunting photo, the lady is holding an 1894 Winchester carbine, kinda obviates the '89 attribution.:D

Alright Pipe Smokers. It's the question that has destroyed countless friendships.

I hate to admit it, but I use a bic most of the time. For me the convenience far outweighs the vintage appeal of the wooden match.

    Ruffed Grouse

Yep, I'm with Skeeter. I do the old step on the wings and pull trick soon as I kill one, wrap the breast in a bit of muslin and fire it into my game bag until I get home. I then fillet off the meat, soak it in cold salty water for an hour or so and proceed as he does. If its a particularly large...

When does a gentleman fight back?

Matt, you nailed it on the head. For me, defence of person or of others calls for violence in, as a noted writer has put it, only "In the gravest extreme." I am a peaceful man who abhors violence, but if the extreme occurs, I shall act.

    braces/suspenders

The two cases you mention kinda indicate the braces are ill fitted for the wearer, but in general, they just end up wherever they need to be for the best comfort re position of the waistband.

    Show us your Guns!

Interesting hot stove dialogue hereabouts, but nobody's mentioned the best of both worlds. Black powder IN cartridges. One time, I recollect, I wuz hunting with a couple of old boys, one of whom had been the head of our Provincial game department for twenty years, was a hunting fool and was a...
