At some point in the 1970's (after the hippie counter culture, and sometime before/during/after the Vietnam war), and with the beginnings of "comedy" routines the likes of Saturday Night Live, it not-so-gradually became uncool to be "old" and "stodgy". I'm not talking about kids wanting to be...
Yes, and that's the rub. If one wears a poly blend, or notched lapels, or *shudder* a matching colored bowtie/cummerbund/pocketsquare combo, they look like a solid rube. And that's just the basics. Then there's the guys with buttons in their shirt instead of studs, flashy cufflinks, badly cut...
Ain't that the truth? The first thing I thought when I saw that picture of Truman at the ball game was, "Wow, and no one is wrestling him to the ground with their hands around his throat?"
Too big for their britches, in my opinion. It's like spending $9 on hot dogs (this, I've seen).
I love Spam, but when compressed pork bits in a can cost more than just buying a pack of deli ham, I stick to peanut butter.
(There are few things better than fried spam planks on toast with...
This is no kidding. When a bank can lose $2bn in an afternoon and say, "Ah, don't sweat it, Jack - we got plenty where that came from", sounds like $400+million isn't really going to be a problem.
I can see it now - the Department of Justice looks at [enter bank CEO] sternly and says, "Pay...

Transportation - no longer a thing of the past! See the amazing new feats! Stand in awe as Science marches forward. Find yourself taken away by fantastic new machines you never dreamed were possible!
So...sounds like the nation's banks are going to get a nice workover. I wonder if this, along with the other multiplying losses, will finally collapse the banks "too-big-to-fail"? Sounds like there are some pretty interested parties, too; i.e. the City of Baltimore.
Scandal Over Rate Fixing...
You know, if this thread is going to live under my roof, it's got to shape up or ship out! No more of this comin' and goin' at all hours of the day.
I say this thread needs to cut its hair, shave, shower and look for a job. It's high time we had an extra hand 'round here, and all this thread...
Mix styles? Sure, why not?
Unless you're reenacting, or perhaps a purist. Like Tom says, men of the era would have mixed and matched clothes, styles, fashions, etc. And if you're just trying to dress well, you'll be fine. ;)
Glue, huh? I'd take it into the dealer. It could be normal wear for this model, or it could be a defect. Better to get it looked at now than after they split. Don't be shy, either. You put down good money for these boots, might as well be square before something significant happens to them.
DN, let's put it this way - modern suits don't fit people like vintage suits used to. For every little thing you find wrong, there will be other aspects you might like.
As long as it fits you and isn't entirely restrictive, I suggest wearing the heck out of it. Get used to suits. Find out...
Aha, I understand you now. Thanks for clarification. I wasn't putting forth the "loin cloth" example as an actual argument, only to say that much of human behavior is essential arbitrary. I mean really, why do we do all sorts of insane things; e.g. war, suicide, bake sales, etc? Humans are funny...
