Thanks, Dave. You're right. It's a Gibson J-45. The odd look of the bracing is due to the angle. If you look at it straight on, the bracing forms a centered cross. Because the bracing is centered, the label has to be placed off-center.
I agree. That hat looks great on you. Its a good example showing that you can't separate the hat from the wearer.
Although there is an artistic aspect to how nice a hat looks by itself, a hat has no practical goodness unless it works for the wearer. And that one does!
I've been using an M3 "Turbo" for awhile (haven't figured out where they put the turbocharger, but I'm sure it's in there, somewhere). It is by far the best razor I have ever used.
So now your're telling me they have one that vibrates? Woo-wee, I better not try it--it might be so good I...
Welcome, Paddy! I've posted a little bit (and lurked a lot) over at the two jacket forums you mentioned. I have always been impressed with your reasonableness and level-headed viewpoints, not to mention your knowledge of A-2s and WWII. You will fit in great here.
As you know, it gets a...
I'm very familiar with Joe Bank. Some things to be aware of:
1. Ask about their corporate discount. I'm not sure if you have to own your own company or just work for one, but if you qualify, you get an additional 10 % off every purchase.
2. Never, ever buy anything not on sale. They...
JP, I've been meaning to ask that same question for a while. Thanks for bringing it up. And thanks, Andy, for the detailed answer. The last part, about when it's okay to wear a hat inside, is what I've always been confused about. For instance, in the Maltese Falcon, there's a scene in a...
Go to ebay and enter "vintage knox hat" (sorry, I don't have the slightest idea how to post a live link). Anyway, scroll down and you'll find a very nice charcoal Knox homburg in 7 5/8. Art should be able to stretch it some, if needed.
Oh, and scroll down a little further and you'll see a...
I agree with everything Krunch said. I'll probably buy my next A-2 or G-1 from FS. The only real departure from aunthenticity in their "Historic" A-2, is the more modern fit (a little fuller). Since most of us are a little "fuller" than 20 year-olds in 1943, that may even be a good thing...
It just occurred to me, vintage-style hats are the perfect hobby, if old classic stuff is your passion. And if, like me, your bank account doesn't look like Bill Gates'.
I have some interest in leather flight jackets (A-2s, G-1s) and also in vintage (generally 1950s) electric guitars...
I was extremely dense when I was trying to learn to tie a bow tie a few years ago. The "tying a shoe" analogy just didn't work for me (still doesn't--I just don't see it). Finally, with the help of diagrams similar to those Zohar posted, I figured it out. But not until I tied and tied and...
I agree. I think only a very few men can pull off the bow tie look. No way to describe the guy who can successfully wear one, but I know 'em when I see 'em.
BTW, the black or white formal bowtie works for everybody. If you ever have the chance to wear one with a dinner jacket, be sure to...
