That's funny, I've recently been wondering the same thing. My guess is the "narrower brim, less formal" theory. Although, the way fashion works, it could be something more bizarre, like designers saw that hats were gradully becoming unpopular, so they began designing hats that were less "hatlike."
A question for all you guys with lots more hat experience than me (that would be just about all of you). I'm looking for a plain, unformed, hat that I can pinch, bash, trim the brim, if necessary, in short, customize into a typical 30s to 40s style fedora. The "model" would be the classic...
Back in the mid-70s, when I was in high school, I had an interesting experience. My dad was the Gulf Oil distributor in the little middle Georgia town where we lived. He got a call one day from a U.S. Government agent of some sort (DEA, maybe?). He said a drug-smuggling plane had been...
And I quote, "...(I'm) careful to intercept the mail before she gets home...there were 5 hat-sized boxes waiting for us when we returned...I've bought seven new hats in the last two weeks...."
Havershaw, the first step is to admit you have a problem.
Thanks, Rundquist, that is exactly what I wanted to know.
By the way, those hats, especially with the turned-up brim, look great on you. That look doesn't work for everybody, but you were made for it.
Andykev is not joking. For some reason, most people don't seem to think skin cancer is a big deal.
My dad died at age 60 from a brain tumor that developed from skin cancer. I'm not trying to be an alarmist, just telling it the way it is. WEAR A HAT IN THE SUN! (Of course, I realize I'm...
OK, guys, a newbie question: What's a Mitchum block? I have gathered it's an Optimo trade name for a certain shape, but what does it look like? Anybody have any pictures? Thanks for indulging a new guy.
Hey, Art, what style of hat did the "Carnivale" lady pick out? And why do you suppose they need 300 hats that are exactly the same?
Carnivale is a very cool show, by the way. They really do a great job of getting the dust bowl/depression era look. Beautiful cinematography (at least to my...
I've always heard that men's hats went out of style, in large part, because of JFK choosing not to wear one at his inauguration. Soon after that, men began wearing their hair longer and "styled." I guess that put the final nail in the coffing for the heyday of men's hats.
My question for...
I, too, am planning to get a seersucker suit this summer. It looks like Brooks Brothers is one of the few options.
Lightweight "tropical" wool suits work pretty well in the summer. I used to have a khaki-colored trop wool suit that had a great summer look and was about as comfortable as a...
As a hat-wearing rookie, I need some advice on what makes a good summer hat. The only lid I own (grey felt, 40s-style fedora) seems more like a cooler-weather hat to me. Works great with the suit and tie I wear during the winter.
In spring and summer, I generally dress down when going to...
Before I became a hat snob, I was a beer snob (still am). As I sit here typing, I am enjoying a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, my current favorite general-purpose recreational brew. I love Guinness, but only on drought. The bottled version just doesn't have the magic, even with that cool...
Actually, DO Bogart that hat.
All right, guys, I need guidance. Everybody gets to voice his opinion on this one. As previously noted, I'm new to this. For my first REAL fedora, I want a reasonable facsimile of a Bogie lid. It doesn't have to be dead solid perfect, but it's got to have...
Gentlemen,
I'm brand new to the forum, and a novice (a couple of months) hat wearer. Just in lurking here for a few weeks, I have learned so much. It's great to get so much knowledge in one place.
Two months ago, I didn't have a clue about hats. I just knew I was ready to start wearing...
