Best advice? Mason and Pearson small real bristle brush. Don't use serum when you're setting.
To get a wave I dry mine straight first (but I don't use straighteners!) and then re-curl it using loose big pin-curls.
I use a tiny bit of a creme anti-frizz...

Although, I have to say at a WW2 show I went to in July they had two burlesque artistes and to be honest, even the guys were surprised. They stripped very quickly and to modern underwear.
