Personally, I 've found no easy answer to this. My only technique is to choose a thinner tie and to thread it around the collar, being careful to ensure that the wide end is pulled through to the correct extent, to minimise the amount of adjusting needed. Then I tie the tie as arranged...

As a Kent Army user myself, I think it is something about distributing the hair's natural oils evenly from the base to the tip. I also have the impression that plastic bristles are generally less kind to hair.
I was lucky, I managed to pick up a very similar coat and waistcoat for £5 in a charity shop in Yorkshire and then earlier this winter I picked up.a suitable pair of trousers, again for £5. Such things do seem to be becoming increasingly rare, though.
