MoK, I agree. Amongst my first dress hats were three Olney "Brompton" fedoras in navy, grey and brown, and for the money (£25-£35 each) I thought they were excellent value.
Whilst I'm on the subject here's another, this time in black wool, double-breasted but without lapels and with a keystone button stance which leads me to guess it may be continental-tailored.
If it helps, Darcy's (under its previous name) were selling the last runs of these about five years ago. I picked up a few for use with white waistcoats.
From experience you might get them interacting with you as if you are a fellow re-enactor (or Spiv in my case) but other than that I suspect that they will only be grateful that you came and made the effort.

I tend to alternate between Hackett's own brand (which is quite waxy), Pluko Black & White (lovely coconut smell) and Yardley's English Lavender Brilliantene, although I tend to save the latter for formal evening use.
