Show us your kid pics (you as a kid)

I am pretty sure that I dressed myself in this one. ;)

Gentlemen, show us what you've made!

Thread looping can be incorrect threading as well as too loose tension. This is probably the top thread, not the bobbin. It sounds to me like the thread is missing the tension disks or the take up lever. A bent needle can cause problems too.

Sun protection in the golden age

One from the family photo album. My grandmother used a straw hat, her dad had sunglasses. This photo is probably late 30's.

WWII Photos - Taken / Collected by Family Members

He was only in during WWII, he was stationed in Europe and Asia. He also worked for the DoD as a rather high ranked civilian (GS-15 or 16). I am trying to get details from the military. I haven't really seen this photo in person. It is rather unbelievable that those could be his...

WWII Photos - Taken / Collected by Family Members

Here's one of my dad, he was a combat engineer. I am waiting for his service records since I don't know what all the decorations are for.

    What's Your Fav Hairspray?

I am trying to use up the multiple bottles of Sebastian Laminates hairspray that I bought on eBay. It has taken me a while to get rid of just one though. It is pretty good for a non-aerosol I guess. I've sprayed my hair for a few days and it hasn't flaked yet. Elnett is only available at...

    Favourite Scents

Narcisse Blanc is light and fresh, different than Narcisse Noir. There is orange blossom and rose, and it has the creamy Caron undertone. I've heard it described as soapy, but it seems more powdery and sweet on me. I don't think that 3 year old Chanel should go bad unless you live in the...

    Besame cosmetics

I am actually looking forward to the new lipstick formula, I found the old one rather drying. I haven't broken the old lipsticks, yet. (Knock on wood) Once, an eyeshadow broke, but I did drop it on the bathroom floor. However, I've had a hard time opening the blush, so I generally hand it...

Getting a vintage haircut: what to ask for?

I am not an expert Blondie, but it looks like a bob to me. Maybe it is a bit of a U? I can't tell how she curled it there, but it is probably a wet set. The one thing I know for sure is that my hair would never do that no matter how I cut or set it. If I cut my hair that short it...

    Dress forms

I have an adjustable one from Dritz. I paid about $100 on sale. It isn't perfect, but it does have adjustable waist and height. I do have to pad the chest to fit for myself though. You can't pin into the fabric on it, but that is easy to fix, put a t-shirt on it. It is nice, but it...

Difference between french hairpin and normal hairpin

The only difference that I could see is in the description. French pin: rounded high tension ends Regular pin: ball tipped ends I am not sure how different the ends would be to use. Maybe the hairdressers here know of functional differences in the two types.

    Viscount sewing machines?

Sorry, Neecerie I got a stash of Adler bobbins from a now defunct sewing repair in Torrance during the early 1990's. I think eBay is the only way now. If you are trying to find them now, I feel your pain. I feel fortunate that it uses standard needles and that I have the manual (needles...

    Viscount sewing machines?

Wow, and I thought 30's-40's Adler bobbins were hard to find! It appears to be a UK sewing machine company, Silver Viscount. Their website doesn't seem to include bobbins. Maybe they use common bobbins like Singer or Pfaff? I assume it uses a bobbin case? This site says that some Viscount...

    Resizing Patterns

It was with the interfacing last time I bought it, which was about a year ago. It is called Pellon 810 Tru-grid, they have it on Joann.com, but you have to buy a whole bolt I think. Unfortunately, their cheap muslin is probably less expensive. It is nice stuff though, I actually like it...

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

I've seen those trees in Southern California too, but I'm not sure of the name. The only photo I could find that looked like it was the Tembusu tree, but that is native to SE Asia, so I don't know if it would be in Croatia or not. Maybe someone else here would know for sure.

    Resizing Patterns

I usually use Swedish tracing paper from birchstreetclothing.com or the grid pellon from JoAnn's for that kind of thing. If my pattern is too wide for the paper, then I just pin a piece on to it and then sew it together.

    50s pencil skirts

I think the woman in your pencil skirt photo is wearing a corset girdle. I have one that is marked "full hip" and that is what you would need to get that figure. I can't wear it at the moment because I'm too heavy, but when I was thinner that is exactly what my waist/hips looked like in it.

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

^I've smelled Sillage de Reine. It's okay, a nice expensive floral, better than the 1800's Creeds, but not worth what they are charging for me. I'll stick to my Creed "Jasmine Imperatrice Eugenie," "Fleurs de Bulgarie" (Queen Victoria) or "Fleurissmo" (Princess Grace) if I need to smell...

    50s pencil skirts

I've seen photos of 50's women who fill out those pencil skirts perfectly. It seems to me that my 50's girdle shapes my hips so that they would (in theory) fill in that wider part. Maybe you just need to get period undergarments?

    LA in the 1940's

If you want to ride a red car for nostalgia, they have one red car line here in San Pedro (part of LA) for the waterfront tourists. It operates on the weekends.
