What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

The Gaucho (1927) at the Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles with Douglas Fairbanks. I've been going most Wednesdays lately for Silent Movie Night. Next week is Rudolph Valentino!

    Ceramic Stoves

My Elite Golden Supreme heater is adjustable, from 1-10. It is a modern one, but it is art deco styled. Mine is red: They are about $199 new, but I got mine on ebay for almost nothing. The one setting doesn't wave my hair, and it singes on 10. I have hard to wave hair so I use...

    Show Us Your Compacts . . .

I am going by memory here, and honestly the compact has been gone for about 30 years. The Queen Mary one that my mom had was a yellow metal, I'm guessing brass, but you could call it "gold tone." It said Queen Mary on the front, I think in another color but I'm not sure, (red, blue? )...

    Show Us Your Compacts . . .

The only vintage compact that I have is a Djer Kiss Fairy compact, from about 1925. It looks like this: Unfortunately mine no longer has the rouge pot in it. I am wondering if one can fashion a refill? Anyway, regarding Queen Mary compacts, my mother used to have one, but it was very...

What is your favorite red lipstick brand/shade?

I don't think anyone answered this one. I used to have a red lipstick called Demi Red by Almay. It was a sheer moisturizing one. It was a nice shade that I used to wear to work sometimes. Not sure if they still make it. Anyway, I've been mostly wearing Revlon's Wine with Everything...

    slippery floors....a modern phenomenon?

I think that there were plenty of slippery wooden and marble floors in the past. When I dance on older dance floors they seem pretty slick. Talc is much better than what a lot of dancers use here in SoCal, boric acid, which is really fast and not good for the finish. However, if you know...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

I iron my patterns on a low iron setting, this is necessary to get the right fit, if it is wrinkled the pattern is distorted. I don't use any press cloth. They come out fine, but you need to make sure they don't get wet. My iron can leak a drop of water now and again and that isn't good...

    Vintage Talon Zipper

You can shorten a zipper by cutting it off at the top, but you'll probably need to make a new "stop" for the zipper so you don't pull the zipper pull off. You can do this with thread, but it won't look as perfect as the original one. You need to make sure that if you do it yourself, that you...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

I think I mentioned it in this thread before, but I used to perform minor "tune up" services on sewing machines for a living. Dolly, loops on the underside of the fabric is almost always too loose tension on the top thread. A loose bobbin looks like an S on the bottom. You might be...

    need some brutal honesty!

I really like the first dress, especially with a white collar. I think you should consider it. It just seems more classy to me. Best of luck with the ex.

    How tall are you, Ladies?

I am just a bit over 6' (185 cm). So all those jeans that are too long for you average ladies are still too short on me. My current jeans are gap xlong's and they are barely long enough. Vintage clothing simply doesn't exist in my size, even though I know I had relatives that were my size in...

Tips for that nostalgic true feminine smell..!

Femme and White Linen are not "typical" florals, Sung is, but it is a strong scent. If he likes Giorgio and Opium, I'd say that maybe he prefers orientals, have you tried YSL Paris? It is an amber and rose scent--so floriental? As for me, I wear what I like, I am not going to trust someone...

Tips for that nostalgic true feminine smell..!

Jicky is very different from today's modern perfumes. I like it, but it is hard to find in stores around here. They have it at some Nordstrom's, maybe Bloomingdales, and some boutiques. If you don't live near one of those, maybe samples from the internet are the best way.

    VintageGoth?

Why is it past tense? Current 93 has a tour in Europe this summer according to their website. Death in June is a good show too, although I had to cross a picket line to get in. I thought this thread would be about vintage goth stuff since the scene is older than Adam...

    San Francisco...a little help?

Finding a clean and affordable hotel in downtown SF can be a challenge. But come on, for $450 you can stay at the Four Seasons. The Fairmont is only $259/night. There are also a lot of places in the $100-200 range. But for under $100...and I assume you want a bathroom? You can try Hotel...

    Just how vintage are you?

I don't think that I am that old yet, but I guess I am very vintage. I was born during the Johnson administration, but only remember Nixon (and the Vietnam War and "I am not a crook") as a kid. Anyway, I saw Coke in a machine with glass bottles recently, can't remember where. What I...

    Best hairpsray ?

I "accidentally" bought three cans of Sebastian Laminates hairspray on eBay. So, I think that is what I'll be using for at least a year. It is a really nice hair spray however, and is nice and shiny.

Anything wrong with wearing Red to a Job Interview?

Congratulations Rita. I was going to say the only reason I can see not to wear red for most industries is that it shows badly if it chips. I suppose it also depends on the job you are applying for, it is fine for most jobs say--an administrative assistant, art dept. or AP clerk, but more...

    Besame cosmetics

The translucent powder in the gift was light enough for me, the vanilla scent might take some getting used to though. For some reason I can't remember exactly how light the light pressed powder is. I didn't buy it though, so maybe I thought it wasn't a good match? Forget about their...
