Anyone watching "Who Do You Think You Are"?

The full version has ancestry plus traits and health information, and you can download your 500,000+ SNP's and compare them to science and medical journal articles. For ancestry, they give you your mtDNA haplogroup, Y-DNA haplogroup (if male), autosomal DNA, ancestral origins, global...

Anyone watching "Who Do You Think You Are"?

I've been watching the show, though I have been an ancestry.com member for 8 years so there isn't a lot left to find for me. I also watched Dr. Gates show on PBS, "Faces of America" recently too. So, I took the 23andme test last summer when they released Relative Finder beta. Actually...

Gabardine is a weave not a fiber: The fabric and fiber content terminology thread

Lady Day, I'd call your fabric lightweight ribbed novelty cotton. It is a bit like Ottoman too, though I doubt you could call it that. boushi_mania: Chino was originally a left hand twill. Chino fabric in fabric stores is a weave that looks similar to Sateen, in that it is a bit shiny since...

I love that pattern Kamikat! What is your final fabric? I would probably go looser with a softer fabric, but not so much with say printed handkerchief linen.

    Do You Dress For Dinner?

Annie, Do you mean: or I would think that the latter is pretty rare. It is great that your family eats together, most don't today. Most homes in my area don't even have facilities for a formal dinner. Sometimes kitchens aren't large enough for a family table (like mine), but...

    Elastic in fabrics and clothes

I have seen elasticated Victorian corsets, so it was used in clothing for a while. I don't recall seeing any waist bands of this early on, but I do have a 1929-1930 pattern that calls for elastic in the sleeve bottom. My mom did have elastic underwear during WWII, that fell off...in...

    Do You Dress For Dinner?

I really wanted to make a snarky reply to this thread, but I don't want to get banned. I did Google "naturalist dinner" and found appropriate photos, but I really do wear clothes for dinner. Seriously, people could lose their appetite. Obviously I dress a bit better for dinner at Cicada...

    Vintage Lipsticks, etc.?

Most or maybe all of the old shades are gone, except maybe Revlon and Tabu. Most of the old brands are gone too. Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden seem to have discontinued all of their old shades and replaced them with new ones. I looked at EA's website and they do have a 100th...

Gabardine is a weave not a fiber: The fabric and fiber content terminology thread

Your burn test sounds like acetate or maybe acrylic to me. I would still dry clean though. I guess if it is newer polyester is possible too. As for vintage rayon. I went and sniffed a few dresses. The rayon ones have an odor, but it doesn't smell woody or cardboard-ish to me, I would...

Gabardine is a weave not a fiber: The fabric and fiber content terminology thread

That could be rayon or acetate, or even silk. I'd probably dry clean it either way. Less chance of the color running or major shrinkage.

    All things Sewing Machines!

Is this a compact machine, I can't tell? The compact machines are a little harder to work with because you don't have as much room for things like pant legs. Some of them have underpowered motors too. If you want to make jeans this probably isn't too good. However, if you want to do crafts...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

Most of those skirts were mid weight wools. One of them (center top) looks heavier, like a tweed. The black one could be something lighter like canton crepe, probably rayon. I made a 30's style bias skirt in wool gabardine, and it still looks pretty stiff. Other fabrics that might work are...

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

Thanks, but a real nose would know a lot more than me... Usually the same company owns the rights to the name, so they can change the formula if they want to. Unfortunately, they often change the formula so it will be cheaper, and the result smells cheaper too. I did like the new Vert Vent...

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

I like heavy scents at times, yet vanilla, carnation, clove and cinnamon are not light, and those are the notes in Bellodogia. The scent is nice, and soft, but a little heavy to me, but then I am not a huge fan of carnation perfumes. My huge bottle of Carnation toilet water has been sitting...

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

White Shoulders is 1945. It used to be available in every drug store in the country for a good price, but it may be declining in popularity. You should be able to get it at Wal-Mart still. It is pretty nice for the price as I recall, I think many of you would like it, though I haven't...

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

Actually Lavender body splash sounds really vintage to me. That is the sort of thing my grandmother or great-grandmother would have worn. I went through a Nuit de Noel mania last September. I bought a bottle of it at a vintage store. I've seen it at mall perfume shops and online stores...

    Favorite Vintage Perfumes

I saw (and tried) Vent Vert when I was in Sephora in Paris. So, it is still being made. There are online stores like Amazon that carry it too. It is getting harder and harder to find classic perfumes. However, some of the better department stores still stock some of the good ones...

    All things Sewing Machines!

Sugarkitten, I am not really familiar with your machine, but it looks to me like you are threading it wrong in the photo you posted. To me it looks as though you have skipped the tension disks, and that the thread is going straight over to the take up lever. If so, that could be your...

Show us your vintage knitting and crochet!

My mom taught me how to knit this last Thanksgiving while she was staying at my house, a bit more than 3 months ago. I did a garter stitch scarf as my first project. I am not ready for advanced stuff yet, no lace, cables, intarsia etc, but a bit of ribbing is fairly easy. I would like...
