Borax for what?
Hello! Althouth I have never restored an old trunk, I do know of one trick to keep moths out of things: Borax!!
I recently inherited my Grandmother's hats that she had stored from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s and NONE of them had moth holes and many of them were wool!!!
The...
Thrift Store Heaven!
WOW, I just had to delete about 4 paragraphs about how started buying vintage things from the Thrift Stores; that's a whole storey in itself! Maybe I'll start a thread on that!
Anyway, my neck of the woods is abundant with 40s & 50s men's clothing, although not so much...
I LOVE those, especially the fashion and make-up ads! The women and men were so glamorous in the 40s & 50s advertisements...
Thanks for posting that link!
Hello!
Hello! I have a question....
Has anyone actually bought these inserts? Are they available right now? We have a CVS not that far from me and if they are available, I would pick myself up some AND get a few extras for anyone on here that would like them and doesn't have a CVS near them...
Do you have a book on sewing/tailoring?
Taking in the waist isn't that big of a deal, especially if you have a book that shows you how. I was lucky enough to work in a dry cleaners/tailoring shop a number of years back, so I can do general repairs and sewing; I have a book around here...
I get it now!
I haven't sewn a pair of pants in some time, so I was thinking that the cut you are talking about would be going in the wrong direction. Since this is a diamond shape and not a triangle, they would have had to cut BOTH sides of the pants that way, right?
I think you're right...
I think that I will offer them there... I have ALL of my Grandfather's shoes as well as a couple of others that came from my 84 year old neighbor's husband! They're all packed up... I just need to pull them out and gather them all together. Some of them are really neat! I'd like to see the shoes...
NO Fading... no no no
Hi Baron!
We actually had some sun here in Syracuse, so what you are seeing on the pants is actually from the window (I was trying not to use the camera's flash totally). Anyway, if you look, the same pattern is on the pants no matter which way they were held: front...
Ok, it seems like now that I'm digging through some of this 'stuff' I have lots
more questions! Here are two hats that I've had for ages and ages that I'm
hoping to get some information on:
I read the Skimmer thread but no one talked about a 'painted' skimmer.
This first hat I'll show has...
Does that help? WOW, does it ever!!! That's the most information I've ever seen about the different shoe types! Thank you tons!! I've got it all printed out now, for future reference.
I LOVE the alligator ones too! Since I'm in Syracuse, where the NETTLETONS were made, I come across them ALL...
Alligator Nettleton Shoes
I almost forgot that I have these buckle shoes! They are by Nettleton (so are
handmade) and they are definitely alligator. Any thoughts as to the age?
Thanks again for the help. This is like being in college all over again... hmmm,
maybe I should...
Ok, here are the green shoes. I'm sure they are newer than all the rest but
just HOW new is my question.
That says CLUB Italian Shoe, Due Esse, Made in Italy
So that's it for these shoes. I'll take some photos of the buckle shoes if anyone would like to take a crack at dating...
Gosh, I'm with the other ladies! We need a specific footwear thread! I'm trying to find period info on men's shoes but NOT the bi-colored spats and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack :(
Yep, there is no raised 'grain' so to speak. If you closed your eyes and felt the wool, you would have no idea that there was any pattern to it at all!
Take a look at this photo... the color is off but as you can see, looking at this from an angle, the pattern is not raised.
The weaving looks very similar, however that tan suit looks like the pattern is raised, where as the blue one is practically, if not totally, flat. I think it's the pattern on the blue one that gives the illusion of being raised.
....oh Darn! Now I have to go and feel it again!!! I guess I'll...
Hey a New Englander! I was born and raised in New Hampshire!
Anyway...
I own an old converted farmhouse and we LOVE it! Lots of neat things that you get in the older Victorians too that you don't get in the 50s and newer homes. Lots of nooks and crannies in older houses! Hardwoods too!
And...
MORE Brown Suit Pics
Ok, here are some more photos of the brown suit (I know this one isn't gaberdine but it is wool):
The chest pocket is slanted downwards, toward the center of the jacket.
That's a piece of paper sticking out of the watch pocket, just so you don't miss it...
