Bailey Parabuntal cowboy hat, $25.00 plus S&H. I was the only bidder. More (auction) photos in the "Parbuntal straw hats" thread. Maybe that spelling error ought to be fixed?
"Faint hat never won fair lady."
Just won this one on eBay. A Bailey U-Rollit cowboy parabuntal "rope weave." I have no idea of the vintage (but note that it is reeded).

Thanks for the photos.
The iron I saw resembled the second from the left, but was slighter & more artfully curved. It was obviously not a soldering iron (not being heavy & made of brass or copper like the others). I assumed it was probably a hatter's iron but was both uninformed & financially...
Darrel: Hard to criticize. It looks pretty good. I've noted that my first efforts benefited greatly from the purchase of a flat iron for forming a good crease at the foot, where the brim meets the crown. I can't tell if yours dips there like my first efforts, but if so you may benefit from...
Thank you! It is an interesting and functional knot.
I just built it and note that it is really comprised of three separate knots. The first slip knot forms the bight used to make the second slip knot, which tightens on the cord to lock it into place. The granny knot acts as a stop to keep...
I thought I saw one in an antique store the other day in a pile of old soldering irons, but hesitated because I haven't researched them & wasn't sure. I think you are right about the usage. Should be in Ermatinger...

This was a twofer, because I have been meaning to ask about this. Can you elaborate a little on the cloth?
Also, can anyone explain a hatter's knot? I know it is a "slip knot," generally, but my research is coming up empty on the exact nature of the knot...
Although it is not a "tool" as...
When I first started wearing hats, I was sometimes the guy who "ran off without his hat." Now that "the hat is part of the man," it is very uncommon, and I understand both sayings much better.

The issue from my perspective is that it is hard to just wet the sweatband without getting some of the felt wet, and that the felt will usually water mark where whetted. Also, the hat will conform better if the felt is also more flexible.
Incidentally, you should not worry about getting fur...
Incidentally, I don't think you've got a missing bow. None of my Champ featherweights have a bow. The only ones I've seen with a "bow" are those with the stratoliner style ribbons.

Yes. I have been gathering some necessary items & contacts (suppliers of quality materials) and learning skills. I have 37 vintage flanges in various widths & sizes, most from a second generation hatter who opened a shop in Kingsport Tenn. in 1951, and at least 11 crown blocks, most from...
Sorry about that, but it really was me pushing buttons, not a sniping program. I was traveling and had an alarm set, so I stopped for lunch and watched the clock run down. It was exciting there at the end!

(I tried a PM but was declined due to your new kid on the block status, so hope the gents here will forgive me).
You will find that hat tools are hard to find & surprisingly expensive, making it a bit difficult to just dive into.
Have a look around and then PM me if you want a puller downer &...
