Here's a sweet Dobbs I found today and posted in the Diner: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showpost.php?p=1676806

    Post New Hats Here!

Thanks. I put this on a size 7 (one size smaller than actual size) 7 5/8 tall open no flare block from the Langenberg factory, and it fit perfectly. When I took it off and steamed it, that old shape popped right out. It feels like archeology sometimes, making these beaters look good and...

    The Dobbs Diner...

Here's a nice unreeded Dobbs with a Whippet style brim binding that I picked up today for $10 in a mad dash through an antique store a few towns over. I don't know the model or vintage, but note the lack of a reed and the slanted hallmark. Maybe Mr. Bowers or one of you other Affectionados can...

    Post New Hats Here!

Here's a new Flagship that arrived after some long delay due to an illness in Seller's family. I'm thinking 1940's based on "Stetson Royal Deluxe," block style, unprotected liner, unreeded sweat, stars logo & embroidery, but I don't know the real timeline for the Flagship. It's faded a bit...

    Stetson block profile numbers

I collected and traded a fantastic 1930's (I believe) Whippet a while back that had a stars liner, wide sweat & impressed label, but also a 1960 tag in it from a Milwaukee hat shop that was famous for renovations. The tag was dated the day after an article ran in the local paper extolling the...

Thank you! I may try this method sometime. It sounds fascinating. Right now, I'm still working hard on my skills & the necessary tools. The conformateur will become a reality in due course - I'll make the next generation out of lightweight wood as the Major suggested, and see what you...

Here's another photo: I learned a lot making this, and it is functional, although with a limited lifespan. I can't wait to improve the design. I appreciate the feedback. Love this forum, and this thread. I have some 1930's - 1940's (or earlier) hat blocks, flange stands, etc. coming. I...

You can't see from this photo, but there is an elastic band held by loops of thin cardboard on the end of each foot, at the inside oval of the halo when the legs are released. The next version will have a groove as suggested (and incorporate the Major's other suggestions), and maybe a keeper...

Thanks! I very much appreciate your feedback Major. It means a lot. I had planned to do the next in plexiglass, but may try cedar based on your comments. I will implement your suggestions, and PM you some photos. Maybe we could trade tools, and you could give me more feedback.

I just built & tested a _cardboard_ mallaird style halo conformateur tonight as a prototype. The next model will be plexiglass. This one has 20 legs, and allowed me to trace my head shape accurately for a custom band block (yet to be built). The cut-out I made fits my best fitting hat &...

Glad that worked out for you. I made a puller downer last weekend from an old oak desk drawer, and will be trying a foot tolliker this weekend. Here is the puller-downer. The shape was traced from a 7 1/8 brim flange, as I have no vintage model. I will shape the Tolliker in clay based on...

Bump, and my answer, if you haven't found one yet. The stain should not hurt anything as long as it is finished, which unfortunately does not seem to be the case. I would let the flange dry completely in sunlight if it still has wet oil stain still on it, and then coat it with a good quality...

    Western, anyone?

I've had some great work done there. The mini Champ they did is sublime, albeit shockingly expensive. Unfortunately, I've also had an inferior ribbon & wrong bow placed on a 100 year old bowler, and the sweatband in the same hat coming loose before I got it back to the car. That's when I...
