Any idea who made Stetsons under license in the UK? Maybe Locke? I have beautiful Stetson Zephyr made under license there. It really isn't _that_ light, but it's made of fantastic felt.

I don't know how leather responds to polyurethane - it may well present some breathing & maintenance( oiling) issues, and color change might be an issue too - but it would almost certainly prevent this particular problem by adding a thin layer of durable plastic coating. There may be a better...
Here's another Whippet anomaly, offered by Timothy's Closet. This one does appear to be true vintage, but is anything but typical.

That's what I thought. I have only one other dark blue fedora - a Stetson Gold Medal from Lundstrom's of SF. This one was not well described, but looked in pretty decent shape. I'll have to research the maker, but it looks like a 1950's hat with that wide caramel colored sweat. The liner...
Picked this blue fedora up last night at a very good BIN price. I know nothing about the maker, and have fingers crossed. Auction photos.

Haven't got a shackle iron yet.
Lost an auction on this interesting European make brim cutter today :-(
This is an interesting and very simple design compared to others I've seen. Shouldn't be too hard to reproduce in metal, but structural integrity might present a problem in wood...
I have read that working cowboys liked very stiff brims, and that they were often stiffened with rawhide stitching. An aging cowboy I know told me that when he wrangled cattle in Montana or Wyoming (can't remember) as a young man, they stiffened their hats with a sugar solution.
I actually...
Thanks Ole, I have what appears to be an early 1960's Langenburg stingy brim in midnight blue with the same markings. I generally don't like stingy's but it is a really great hat, rivaled only by my Stetson Nutria Quality hats, so I have high hopes for this one.

I believe I saw that one, but was watching this, and spent my $ on it instead:
