Is the suit relevant in your life?

The two best books I have read about the early Christian movement in the first 4 or so centuries AD (of course) conclude that after the initial very earliest wave of fishermen and fishwives and such, the spread of Christianity occurred amongst the not-so-humble strata of Mediterranean society...

What's the Funniest Things to happen to you in vintage?

I am not sure how much this has to do with dressing vintage, but I think y'all might enjoy it. About a year ago I was pushing my daughter in a stroller down a pleasant street in Berkeley. She was about 1 year old. A man in his early 60s was walking on the sidewalk toward me. He looked at...

    Pants Cuffs

My best 1940s suit trousers have 2" cuffs. But they are very long pants for a tall person. Inseam is about 33. One might want narrower cuffs for a shorter person. Or not.

NEW WAVE OF NOIR; Doing it how they did it(1920's-1940's).

Nice thread gents. Now I'm thinking about stopping using sepia .... but it's become my trademark! EDIT: I just stopped using sepia.

    Halloween Costumes

I'm gonna be Sarah Palin. My friend works in a costume shop and she already has the wig and the right glasses. She'll also do the makeup. I'll shave my legs and I'll get some sort of skirt-suit at a thrift store and shoes. (No, I am not dressing like her out of admiration, before you ask.)

    "Crisis, what Crisis?"

We have a certain income because we are both grad students. It isn't going to change unless McCain gets elected and enacts his "government spending freeze." (We are in a public university.) We started posting our expenditures ON THE REFRIGERATOR. On a chart. So it's all right there in front...

Is the suit relevant in your life?

i'm a Graduate Student Instructor at Berkeley. Lately it has been very hot, in the 80s, so no jacket, but when it's not painfully hot I wear a suit. No, I do not need to and am not expected to, and the professors almost never even wear ties, much less suits. But I have always appreciated a...

You, my good man, are my new hero.

    Essential reading about the 1920s-40s?

I don't mean to start a fight, but IN MY OPINION Miller is at best a third-rate Louis-Ferdinand Céline. Highly derivative. The conscious use of non-literary language, the slang, the stream of consciousness, the breaking out into rants, the view of the world through urine-colored lenses, the...

Noir hero for the modern era. The Big Lebowski

I loved Brick. Just loved it. The balancing act was outrageously perfect. I'd love to read your paper, Spiffy. If you want to show it to me, that is.

    Modern Singers, Classic Music?

1.) Surely we can all agree that there are some things in our lives about which we are quite purist and others about which we are not so purist. 2.) Surely we can also agree (Sarah) that there are some things which may act as a useful gateway drug to get people into the thing that we love...

    1938: Length of Ties

I believe I have at least one 1930s tie like that. But no, I don't want to photograph it because photobucket leaves me suicidal, it's so horribly slow. I only post photos of humungous importance (like my latest haircut).

    Steampunk, Dieselpunk, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Piecraft/Dieselpunk OK, I have to repeat another member's note several pages ago on this thread: the use of "punk" as a suffix for these movements, should no longer be acceptable. It is, at this juncture in time, cliched, passé, and inaccurate. AND, YES, I...

The people I've met from the Lounge.

And I even forgot .... MetroPD, who was up in the area and with whom I had burgers and brewskies at a local Berkeley joint, Raleighs, and many, many hours of fine conversation, who turned out to be an expert on old-school rap. Who'd have thunk it? The range of skills, areas of knowledge, and...

Al Sharpton called me "Dick Tracy" today...

A monstrous tale. 1.) There is no white supremacist ritual involving raping a black woman. I knew a few pretty representative white supremacists (or 'white nationalists') in the late 1980s (and no, I do not refuse to talk to people with whom I profoundly disagree. In fact, I usually want to...
