    Plastic Hat Shapers really work!

He is right TJ - with the sweat in you want your actual head size. Same thing as one size down from your block size, because of the increase for the sweat.

I'll update with pdf's when I can - these iphone photos are rather small.

All right, this has been an ongoing project of mine, and I have not started a real analysis, but here's a spreadsheet of 7 vintage hat rulers & their hat/head size charts. Resistol is partial because there was no further information on the ruler. Stevens, JB Mast, RP Kenyon, and...

Here's a close up of Hatter4's hat ruler, which is a J.B. Mast. I've adjusted the contrast & sharpness a bit for detail of the sizing. Thanks for the photo, Oliver. I'm building a spreadsheet of the various hat/head size charts from the hat rulers I've seen, and will post it in the near future.

Here's an interesting video I found searching for the AM straw hat conforming machine: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gu9H3sOcifk

I have a vague recollection of having seen an ad, but had forgotten. It looks intriguing, and I would also love to find one. I'm sure they are quite rare...

Here's the new stretcher, it is electric, and is in pretty good shape, but I can't identify a brand. The sizing is an interesting issue in light of the taper. The scale is not accurate at the bottom, but I think it is at about 3/4 the way down...

Thank you! I have always done them by hand. This time I used a small pair of scissors opened about 1/4 inch to mark the spots & pre punch tiny holes evenly spaced, then I used my new stitch awl. The stitch awl was also very handy in tacking down the hatband & liner. I leave one end inside...

    The Conversion Corral

Finally getting caught up. I finished Landman's sweatband replacement tonight. I should finish Splintercellz' C&K rebuild this weekend. Just took it off the block - it upsized only a bit, and I was able to keep the same profile, brim width & crown height as the original hat.

Nice one! I did not see the auction - I'll have to tweak my saved searches. This one looks pretty soft - the one I sold Garret was pretty stiff. Great color too...

Well, everything after the colin is Mark DeCou's statement from the Etsy ad. I don't have a didactic memory, but I saw the ad and knew I'd seen a vintage example of a "pull closed" shackle. I'm glad you had one to post.

    Western, anyone?

It just needs to be very fine grit for the finishing. I bought a box of 1/4 sheets ranging from 600 to 1000 grit (maybe even higher). If you are taking off a lot of material you can use a much courser grit (I used 100 to get a raw body down to size for a build) but as with wood, you've got to...

Thanks Hatter4. I knew I'd seen this before. The ad said he was seeking a patent because the design is unique: On antique hinged shackles, the hinge motion was designed to "open" the shackle so that it could be removed off of the finished brim edge. In my research, I came up with the idea of...

Marc DeCou has a new design for a shackle, or is it? It seems like I've seen this before on vintage shackles. Anyone seen a shackle that swings closed with a handle like this? http://etsy.me/1pPH3wJ
