It's got a coach pin as well

Whilst I'd never wear it in it's current form, I do feel a bit guilty converting it in the same way I can appreciate the skill in Homburg conversions, but like homburgs... I like Westerns on other people, but a Strat or OR is as far West as I'd feel comfortable wearing in leafy England.

I met the Stetson rep at Rodeo Houston yesterday and after telling him the accusation Longfellow made in regards the Chinese government owning Hatco, he rolled his eyes and assured me Pro Equine is NOT a branch of the Chinese government. Longfellow, defend your products, correct your shipping, stitching, gold labeling, and quality control problems, but don't spread false information to us regarding other American companies.

Resistol Stagecoach:

That's going to be a beaut Richard! I think mine started off just as tapered in the crown as yours when it was a cowboy hat. John Galt put mine on a straight sided block to take the taper out. Resistol Stagecoaches had real nice quality felt. I think you're going to be real pleased with the results after it's converted. I may just have to go ahead and convert my other Resistol Stagecoach....(just don't tell Joao)

After reading about some of the great western hat makers here I've tried to check some of them out. This has came from D Bar J hats and I enjoy it quite a bit. It was originally a very different looking 5x they had on the shelf but I asked if they would alter it for me and now it looks like this. When trying out new hat makers, if possible, I like to buy something off the shelf to get a sense of the company and quality before going full hog on a big custom job. Needless to say, after this hat I decided I would get a nice custom from them as well. But for now, this is a very nice 5x from D Bar J hats and they were very pleasant and easy to deal with. Quality was worth the money and I look forward to seeing how the more high end hat will come out.

I have to blame Casechopper for my interest for in D Bar J. He sold me a nice used gray D Bar J here for a great price that I've put a beating on this winter. After putting this hat through some heavy weather I was impressed enough that I wanted to check out D Bar J. So far they're a pretty stand up company with great hats and I'm really glad I found them.
I feel lucky to have found so many great hat makers out there. Now if I could just find one in my state lol.

You can buy very fine sandpaper on eBay to pounce it with...

They are not very visible at first sight... is any sandpaper good? Don't think I have to import such thing as it is available here.

It just needs to be very fine grit for the finishing. I bought a box of 1/4 sheets ranging from 600 to 1000 grit (maybe even higher). If you are taking off a lot of material you can use a much courser grit (I used 100 to get a raw body down to size for a build) but as with wood, you've got to take out the grooves this leaves with finer sheets if you want a smooth finish. Also, the old books say if you go too deep you can damage the hat body.

That said, it is not as scary as you might think, once you give it a try.
